Match number 10 of the 2024 T20 World Cup ended with Australia securing a comfortable 39 run win against Oman at the Kensington Oval Stadium of Bridgetown, Barbados on 6th June. With this comfortable victory, Mitch Marsh – led Australia kicked off their T20 World Cup campaign on a positive note.
Oman skipper Aqib llyas asked the Aussies to bat first and they happily accepted the invitation as the 2021 winners managed to put a decent total of 164 runs on the board. Fifties from Marcus Stoinis (67 runs in 36 balls) and David Warner (56 runs in 51 balls) helped the Kangaroos cross the 160 runs mark.
With the ball, Australia were really good as they managed to pick up wickets in the first six overs. Seamer Mitchell Starc was high on confidence after performing well in the business end of IPL 2024 and carried forward his IPL momentum into the T20 World Cup as he managed to pick up a wicket in the very first over of Oman’s batting inning and set the tone for his fellow Aussie bowlers. All Rounder Marcus Stoinis performed well with the ball as well as he picked up two quick wickets and then leg spinner Adam Zampa made life even more difficult for the Oman batting unit as he dismissed two batters as well.
Stoinis ended the match with three scalps and became the third player to score fifty runs and pick up three wickets in a Men’s T20 World Cup match. Nathan Ellis closed out the innings with two wickets next to his name.
Oman’s Men’s National Cricket Team will look at this game thinking that they could have really pushed Australia to the end in this match but that’s the difference between a top team and an underdog team, they punish you even if you give them a small opportunity to make a comeback. The Aqib llyas – led team were superb with the ball in the majority part of their bowling inning and then with the bat as well they looked pretty decent as the middle order batter and even the tailenders managed to play some big shots.
But, they lost way too many wickets in the powerplay which dragged them back and from there on, it was always going to be a tough journey for Aqib llyas and his men. Oman’s Ayan Khan was the star with the bat as he managed to play a useful 36 runs knock while Mehran Khan played a really good cameo of 27 runs from 16 deliveries as the Middle Eastern team managed to avoid an all out and scored some useful runs in the end.
