World Test Championship (WTC) Points Table: South Africa further slips down to the fourth position in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Points Table after suffering an unassailable 2-0 defeat against Australia. The mighty Aussies continued their one-sided domination at home as they hammered the Proteas by an innings and 182 runs in the second test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The Proteas boasted of having a daunting pace attack, but that count for nothing if their batters can’t put up a show and give the bowlers a fair chance to be a part of the contest. In the first innings, the South African batters were wrapped in mere 189 runs total all thanks to the handy half-century knocks from Kyle Verreyenne and Marco Jansen.
In response to an underwhelming total, Australian batters wreaked havoc and piled up 575 runs before declaring the innings. Opener David Warner redeemed himself in his 100th test with a classy double ton while Alex Carey slammed his maiden century in red-ball cricket.
In the second innings, South Africa did nothing better as they were once again packed by the Aussies at a score of 204. Temba Bavuma was the only batter who crossed 50 runs mark in the innings and helped South Africa breach 200 run mark.
Australia now have a safe lead of 2-0 in the three-match test series. South Africa will look to bounce back in the final test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and perform some salvage work in order to avoid embarrassment. Meanwhile, the hosts will back themselves for a complete whitewash in the third test.
