IND vs WI T20I Squad: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to announce IND vs WI T20I Squad in the coming week after the cricket board completes its long impending work of roping in the chief of selectors. Recently, Ajit Agarkar was appointed for the role of chief of selectors, which was vacant since February.
Although the BCCI had announced Test and ODI squads for the West Indies tour a few weeks ago, it withheld the decision to name the T20I squad.
Notably, the India tour of the West Indies will begin with two-match Test series followed by three-game One Day Internationals (ODIs). The five T20Is are scheduled to be held at the end in West Indies and the USA.
“We have time for the T20s and it’s important that only the right talents get picked for the series. It is going to be a test for many newcomers and the chief selector’s input is a must,” said a senior BCCI official.
Reportedly, the BCCI is looking to award several players a national T20I call-up following their laudable performance in the recently held Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.
The likes of Tilak Varma, Akash Madhwal, Jitesh Sharma and Rinku Singh among others are anticipated to get rewarded for their extraordinary show in the league.
“I can’t say who is going to be picked. But for sure, a lot of young talents from the IPL will be there. Now that the focus is on the ODIs, it is important to test the bench strength for T20s,” the official explained.
The T20I leg of the IND vs WI tour is set to begin on August 3 in Trinidad. There is still enough time for the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar to name the shortest format squad.
Meanwhile, some reports also indicated that the BCCI is waiting to get a clear update on the fitness of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah, who are nursing their injuries at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. Bumrah is likely to get a nod to make his comeback in the upcoming Ireland series, while KL Rahul and Iyer are expected to be fully fit before the Asia Cup 2023.
