India’s team were at the receiving end of a heartbreaking loss in the ICC World Cup 2023 final. They faced a seven-wicket thrashing at the hands of Australia at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The Rohit Sharma-led side arguably was one of the best teams in the tournament and it’s fair to say that they deserved to win the ICC World Cup 2023 more than anyone else. The Men in Blue dominated the entire tournament but fell short in the final when it mattered the most.
India won 9 out of their 9 league games in the ICC World Cup 2023. If this was not enough, they also thumped New Zealand by a big margin in the semi-final and paved their way into the final. But they couldn’t handle the pressure in the biggest clash and suffered disappointing losses.
India were asked to bat first and conditions also didn’t favour them. The pitch was slow and the batters found it hard to score runs. Skipper Rohit Sharma (47) gave his team a vital start but perished as he was approaching his half-century. Virat Kohli (51) and KL Rahul (66) tried their best and slammed vital half-centuries.
Their effort powered India to a total of 240 runs. Many were optimistic that they would defend the target because of the kind of bowling lineup they had. The bowlers were right on the money in the start as they picked three early wickets and left Australia tottering at 47/3.
It seemed that it would be a close match but after that Australia took the game away from India. Travis Head (137) and Marnus Labuschagne (58*) played magnificently well and added 192 runs partnership to take the team home and win their 6th World Cup of all time.
