IPL 2024: Team India head coach Rahul Dravid is now in talks with the IPL franchise, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the role of mentor ahead of the Tata IPL 2024. The reports surfaced as Dravid’s tenure as Team India’s head coach ended with the conclusion of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023.
Team India’s disappointing loss in the World Cup 2023 Final against Australia marked the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of the Indian side, which he took up after India’s embarrassing exit from the T20 World Cup 2021.
Dravid succeeded Ravi Shastri in the coaching role on a two-year contract. Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah had played a key role in convincing Dravid to serve the senior men’s cricket team.
Although Team India couldn’t clinch a significant title under Rahul Dravid’s stewardship, it saw a major shift in its approach and temperament. However, things didn’t end well for Dravid and Team India, who were on a 10-game winning run in the World Cup 2023. The team faltered against Australia in the Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19.
Also, if the reports are to be believed, Rahul Dravid is unlikely to seek any extension to his role from the BCCI. It was further learnt that the BCCI would schedule a meeting with the head coach to discuss his future with the Indian team. If no further extension is provided to him, he will be under no restriction to take up the mentor’s role with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
IPL 2024: Rahul Dravid to mentor Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)
The mentor’s post in Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) is already vacant with the exit of Gautam Gambhir, who was roped in by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the same role. Dravid is reported to be in talks with the Lucknow-based franchise to take up the role.
Interestingly, LSG always wanted to have someone like Dravid for the mentor’s role, but couldn’t make it a reality in the last two seasons due to his association with the BCCI. However, now that, perhaps, he won’t seek an extension from the BCCI, he can take up a role.
LSG has done superbly well in the IPL after getting inducted into the league two years back. In both the seasons it has played, the KL Rahul-spearheaded Lucknow has managed to qualify for the playoffs on both occasions.
Last year, LSG finished third in the points table at the end of the league stages. They were defeated by Mumbai Indians (MI) in the eliminator held in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium.
