It’s just been a few days into the IPL 2024 and we have already seen two supremely high-scoring games. One involved Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI), and now Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have etched their name in history against Delhi Capitals.
Though they couldn’t get past 277 runs, the score of 272 is anyway a very impressive target in a 20-over game. The team wouldn’t feel bad about not breaching the highest total of the Indian Premier League, although they were on the brink of achieving the feat.
Seasoned batter Sunil Narine kickstarted the batting mayhem and put up a solid foundation for 272 runs. Narine muscled his way through the first half of the innings and scored 39-ball 85 runs before getting dismissed.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi, too, played his part after being promoted to carry on the destruction. The 21-year-old added 54 runs to the total in 27 balls. Narine’s wicket brought Andre Russell in the middle and he too was in the mood to whack the opposition.
The dangerous Russell didn’t wait for long before he tonked the bowlers for a brilliant 19-ball 41-run innings. He was dismissed in the 20th over when KKR’s was at 264 runs. It required a brilliant delivery to dismiss Andre Russell and a yorker off Ishan Sharma’s arm did the job for Delhi.
Though KKR were on track to take on the highest-ever IPL total, a brilliant 20th over from Ishan Sharma ensured that they finished with 272 runs on the board in 20 overs. Meanwhile, Rinku Singh contributed with his sensational 26 runs handy knock which came off in just 8 deliveries.
The chase was always going to be hard for Delhi Capitals (DC). The massive score on the board meant that DC needed to go big in every single over.
However, things didn’t pan out as well as Delhi would have liked. The wickets started to fall right from the start of the innings. The likes of Prithvi Shaw, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Abhishek Porel were dismissed inside the powerplay by KKR bowlers.
Skipper Rishabh Pant and Tristin Stubbs steadied the innings with their 93-run stand. However, their stay was cut short by Varun Chakravarthy. Rishabh Pant was dismissed after scoring 55 runs in 25 deliveries. Tristin Stubbs, too, had to depart soon after his half-century.
With the fall of these two batters, it was just a matter of time before KKR bundled up the rest of the innings for Delhi Capitals (DC). Against the massive total of 272 runs, Delhi only managed to get 166 odd runs before getting wrapped up by the KKR.
DC lost their third game of the season against KKR by 106 runs. Besides the loss, what would hurt Delhi more will be the net run rate which has sunk down to a miserable -1.347 in the latest IPL Points Table.
