ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Match number five of the 2024 T20 World Cup ended with Afghanistan winning the encounter against Uganda by a huge margin of 125 runs at the Providence Stadium of Georgetown, Guyana on 4th June. With this dominating win, Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan kicked off their T20 World Cup campaign on a positive note.
The Afghans were asked to bat first by Uganda’s Brian Masaba and the Rashid Khan – led team accepted the invitation happily as they put up a good total of 183 runs on the board riding on the back of aggressive 70+ runs innings from the opening dup of Rahmanullah Gurbaz (76 runs in 45 balls) and Ibrahim Zadran (70 runs in 46 balls). Both the openers provided a solid start to the Afghans as they stitched an opening wicket partnership of 154 runs. But, both the batters got dismissed in the 15th and 16th overs of the match respectively off the bowling of skipper Brian Masaba and Alpesh Ramjani.
Following their dismissal, the middle order were expected to keep the scoring rate ticking but they weren’t able to do much and the Rashid Khan – led team finished 20 runs short of the 200 runs mark. Captain Brian Masaba (2-21) and Cosmos Kyewuta (2-25) were the best Ugandan bowlers of the match as they picked up two scalps each and bowled economically as well.
The Brian Masaba made a comeback with the ball but they weren’t able to do much with the bat as Afghanistan bundled them out for a mere score of 58 runs in 16 overs. Uganda will hope to take the positive aspects of this game and perform well in their remaining group stage games.
Chasing a total of 184 runs, Uganda had a really poor start as they lost five wickets for just 18 runs in the first five overs of their inning. Robinson Obuya (14 runs in 25 balls) and Riazat Ali Shah (11 runs in 34 balls) stayed at the wicket for a while but following their dismissals, the rest of the Ugandan batters got dismissed very cheaply. Except Obuya and Riazat, no other batter was able to score more than 10 runs and eventually Uganda got all out for 58 runs.
In terms of Afghanistan’s bowling, seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi was the star as he took five wickets for just nine runs in his four overs. He bowled fabulously and got the better of the Ugandan batting unit. The duo of Naveen-Haq and Rashid Khan chipped in with two wickets each while Mujeeb – ur – Rahman picked up a single wicket.
The Rashid Khan-led team will be really happy with this win, as their net run rate has received a major boost.
