IPL 2025: 5 players set to get retained by each franchise, no RTM Cards| BCCI confirms

Indian Cricket’s Cricket-Governing body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is set to allow all the 10 IPL (Indian Premier League) franchises to retain five-players without the having the option of Right-to-Match (RTM) available in the upcoming Mega-auction of IPL 2025.

In recent meeting which took place at the headquarters of the BCCI, Mumbai, the officials of the Indian Premier League discussed the highly problematic topic of player retention with all of the 10 IPL-Franchise owners, and majority of the them were comfortable with the idea of letting five to six players continue to play with their respective franchises for the next edition of the cash rich T20 league, in order to maintain player continuity from the previous editions of the tournament

Moreover, it was further revealed that each franchise requested the BCCI to let them retain a minimum of five-players in-order to protect their respective team’s brand-value, to which the Cricket Governing Body agreed to, according to a news-report of the Indian Express.

With the luxury of retaining five-players ahead of IPL 2025’s Mega-auction, five-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians could end up benefiting the most, since they were forced to release their star-players in the previous two Mega-auctions due to having limited number of retentions.

While the BCCI has not yet given any official confirmation regarding the player-retention rules for next year’s edition of the tournament, the upcoming Mega-auction could prove to be a now-or-never one for some of the teams.

Furthermore, in the very same-meeting with the Cricket governing body of India, the owners of all 10 franchises wanted the Mega-auction to take place after four or five seasons, rather than having it after the end of three seasons.

Reportedly, five Indian Premier League franchises were not comfortable with the idea of a Mega-auction taking place ahead of the 2025 edition, and those five teams were the likes of 2024 winners Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians

All owners of these five teams wanted the Mega-auction to take place in 2026 rather than having it for IPL 2025.
