Former West Indian Fast-Bowling All-Rounder Dwayne Bravo has ended his cherished and long association with five time IPL winners Chennai Super Kings, with whom he lifted the IPL trophy four times, three times as a player and once as a bowling-coach.
He is set to join defending-champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as a mentor, ahead of IPL 2025.
Bravo, who will be turning 41-years-old in October of this year, replaces the former mentor of the franchise, Gautam Gambhir, who joined forces with the Indian Cricket Team as their head-coach till 2027 after guiding the Kolkata based team to their third IPL title victory earlier this year.
Prior to his announcement of joining the three-time IPL winners, the 40-year-old had decided to hang up his boots from all forms of the sport.
According to ESPNcricinfo, the former West Indian All-Rounder had recently met the CEO of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Venky Mysore, before agreeing to join the Shreyas Iyer-led team as their mentor.
Apart from the three-time IPL winners, Bravo will also be a part of the support staff of all the franchises which are owned by the Knight-Riders group: Los Angeles Knight Riders (Major League Cricket), Trinbago Knight Riders (Caribbean Premier League) and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders (International League T20).
“Dwayne Bravo joining our team is huge and exciting news. His hunger of winning trophies, along with his great knowledge about the sport and his vast-experience will certainly benefit our players and franchise.” KKR CEO Venky Mysore said.
“I have been a part of TKR (Trinbago Knight-Riders) since the last decade in the Caribbean Premier League. Having played with & against them across various T20 leagues around the world, I have a tremendous amount of respect for the KKR group and just love the way they operate,” Dwayne Bravo said.
“The passion of the owners, the family-like atmosphere and their Professionalism make them a perfect franchise. As far as my coaching career is concerned, joining the Knight Riders as a mentor is certainly the perfect-platform for me as I begin the transition from a player to coaching and mentoring the future stars of Cricket,” he added.
This will be the second coaching-related piece of work for the 40-year-old in the Indian Premier League. The Fast Bowling All-Rounder, who was purchased by the Chennai Super Kings in the auction of IPL 2011, retired from the cash-rich T20 League and joined the Yellow Army as their bowling-coach from IPL 2023 onwards.
Having lifted the IPL trophy three times as a player, Dwayne found quick-success as a bowling-coach of the Chennai-based team, as he won his fourth IPL title with the Yellow Army in IPL 2023.
Regarded as one of the best death over bowlers in T20 Cricket, the former CSK All-Rounder is the third-highest wicket-getter in the history of the Indian Premier League and he’s also the 1st player to win the purple cap twice in the history of the competition.
