Rohit Sharma is capable of picking India’s test vice-captaincy role says, Ian Chappell.

Former Australian cricketing legend Ian Chappell, in his latest column for ESPNcricinfo, heaped praises on Indian’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma and even referred to him as “an acclaimed” leader.

Rohit Sharma, a famed white ball batter, recently got his foot cemented in Test cricket as well. After toiling for nearly seven long years in the longest format of cricket, Rohit got his well-deserved chance as an opener in red-ball cricket and it is no secret how well he bossed the position.

In recent India vs England test series, Rohit Sharma along with KL Rahul solved India’s puzzle for the opening combination in the away test matches. The duo routinely provided India with a solid start and proved vital in India’s dominance. Rohit and KL Rahul emerged as the two highest run-getters of the tournament for India and second and third overall respectively.

His white-ball excellence and red ball dominance recently have helped him leave a strong imprint on Indian management as well as in the outside world. The Indian management, now, takes Rohit’s opinion on every situation and loves to keep him around the key decisions.

Amid the ongoing prolonged struggle of Ajinkya Rahane, Ian Chappel suggests India Rohit Sharma’s name who can easily take up the vice captain’s role in the test team as well. Chappel further believes that Rahane’s poor scores could lead him to lose his place in the test cricket for India.

Rahane scores in the recent India vs England test series totalled 107 off seven innings at an average of 15 giving much-needed fuel to his critics.

The former Australian emphasised that India should find some ways to include world-class spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the playing11.

“The only downside would be the loss of Ajinkya Rahane’s tactical input and his slip fielding to the spinners. Nevertheless, Rohit Sharma is now an acclaimed captain and he’s capable of handling the vice-captaincy role,” Ian Chappell wrote in his ESPNCricinfo column.

The ace spinner was benched for a whole India vs England test series due to the presence of Ravindra Jadeja who provide batting depth as well as spin bowling options to India. Though there were some chances of Ashwin’s inclusion in the fifth test match at Manchester, however, the match got cancelled due to a covid-19 outburst in the Indian camp.

Rohit Sharma has aced his chances as the skipper of team India in the limited-overs cricket. He has a fantastic win percentage in white-ball cricket for India and is a favourite to take up the captaincy role from Virat Kohli if India opts for split captaincy.

He was won eight out of ten ODI matches, which he spearheaded which includes a title win of the Asia Cup. The dashing cricketer has taken India to victory in 15 T20I matches out of 19 which includes a famous win of Nidahas Trophy.
