Jos Buttler named Eoin Morgan’s successor for England in white-ball cricket: Senior wicketkeeper batter Jos Buttler has been named as England’s white-ball captain after seven years of service as the vice-captain of the side. Buttler “will take his game to a new level,” predicted Rob Key, managing director of England’s men’s Cricket after naming him the skipper of the white ball squad.
Buttler, 31, has earned tremendous respect as the leader of the group while he acted as Eoin Morgan’s deputy. Notably, the glovesman was initially awarded the vice-captain’s duties on the special request from then skipper Eoin Morgan ahead of the 2015 ODI World Cup.
So far, Jos has already led England in 14 international matches being a stand-in skipper of the side. His latest captaincy duty was against the Netherlands in the third ODI after then skipper Eoin Morgan was injured.
Buttler’s first assignment as the full-time leader of England will be against India in the three matches T20I series which will begin on July 7 in Ageas Bowl. Following the T20I series, Buttler will lead his side against India in ODIs as well.
However, Jos’ primary focus will be on the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in October that is slated to be held in Australia. Moreover, England will be defending the ODI World Cup 2023 in India, which is also not far away. So there are a couple of key tournaments lined ahead for Jos Buttler to test his leadership.
“Jos Buttler was the perfect choice to succeed Eoin Morgan as our white-ball captain, and I had no hesitation in offering him the role,” said Rob Key, MD, England Men’s Cricket . “Jos has been part of our white-ball set-up for over a decade and was integral in the transformation of the way the team has played its attacking brand of cricket over the past seven years.”

“He is well-respected in the dressing room by all of his teammates and will relish leading his country. He is in the form of his life and is showcasing his talent against the best players and teams in the world,” he added.
“I believe the extra responsibility will take his game to a new level and inspire those around him. I’m looking forward to seeing him take us forward. He thoroughly deserves the opportunity.”
It’s an honour to captain your country: Jos Buttler
Buttler, following his appointment as the leader of England’s white-ball side, said it’s a great honour to spearhead your country.
“It is the greatest honour to captain your country and when I have had the chance to step in in the past, I have loved doing it. I can’t wait to take this team forward,” said Buttler in an ECB statement.
He further paid his gratitude to the outgoing skipper for his invaluable services as the leader over the past seven years.
“I would like to offer my sincere thanks and gratitude to Eoin Morgan for his outstanding leadership over the past seven years. It has been the most memorable period for everyone involved. He has been an inspirational leader, and it has been fantastic to play under him. There are lots of things that I have learnt from him that I’ll take into this role.”
