‘Don’t play IPL if you want to win WC’: Rohit’s childhood coach on players’ fitness and workload management.

‘Don’t play IPL if you want to win WC’: Rohit’s childhood coach on players’ fitness and workload management: Dinesh Lad, Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach, has given him some sage advice. He claimed that Rohit would have to give up the Indian Premier League in order to win the World Cup.  India’s semifinal loss to England resulted in their elimination from the T20 World Cup 2022. Following this, Rohit kept getting criticism for his form and fitness. His former coach has now advised him to quit the IPL. Dinesh Lad feels the strain can be managed by the Indian squad skipping the IPL rather than continuing to skip international matches.

Talking about the issue, the veteran coach called for the players missing international matches to manage their workload. He believes that this is the reason why there is no consistency in the set-up and why the Men in Blue have failed to win any major trophy.

Speaking to Sportskeeda, the Mumbai coach criticized the Indian side for not showing consistency as senior players including Rohit and Virat Kohli were rested through some international fixtures.

“I thought, maybe, in the last seven-eight months, we are not a stable team. If we are preparing for the World Cup, it should be an established team. In the last seven months, somebody is coming to open the innings, somebody is coming to bowl, there is no stability,” said Dinesh Lad.

He added that “I don’t think so (on workload management as a potential reason). Everybody in the world is playing because they are professionals, not a workload you can say. Why are they playing in the IPL? Don’t play the IPL if you want to win the World Cup. In actual professional grades, they should play every game (at the international level) because we are getting something from that. It’s not an honorary job and there should be no compromise in international cricket.”

He further said: “It is on them only. How can I say this (whether players should drop their IPL contracts)? They will have to take a call on that. Because you have been playing for India and for your states continuously that’s why you are considered for the IPL. Your international performance helps you determine your salary cap (in the IPL). So directly you don’t get an entry into the IPL.”

For the ongoing white-ball matches against New Zealand, Rohit Sharma has been rested along with players like KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. All three players will be back in action in December when India tours Bangladesh, where they will compete in three one-day internationals and two tests.
