The six-nation Asian cricket tournament will begin on August 27 and the final will be staged on 11th September. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has already released the complete schedule for the tournament. 6 teams – India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and one from UAE/ Singapore/ Kuwait/ Hong Kong – will participate in the Asia Cup 2022 which will be held in the T20 format in the UAE.
In this article, we will discuss the team’s performance of all the six participating teams in the past and their winning probability in the Asia Cup 2022.
Pakistan’s Team performance and Winning Probability:
Pakistan has kept its cricketing standards high in the past few years and is one of the strongest sides to win the Asia Cup 2022. Since the T20 World Cup 2021, Pakistan has played fantastic cricket against all the top cricketing countries.
In the last two years, Pakistan has defeated West Indies twice in the T20I series. Besides this, recently Pakistan has also won the 20-over series against Bangladesh which will give them much required confidence to come up harder in the Asia Cup. Although Pakistan has won just two titles in the Asia Cup so far, they really strong contender to win this edition of the tournament.
India’s team performance and Winning Probability:
Team India starts as the automatic favourites to win any cricketing tournament across the globe. The Men in Blue have been on a consistent run over the last few years in the shortest format of cricket. The Asia Cup 2022 defending champions have a settled side with enough firepower to outplay any opposition on any given day. Moreover, team India is seated at the helm of the ICC T20I rankings which is a good enough reason for the Indians to start as favourites to win the Asia Cup 2022.
The only major issue in front of the Indian management would be Virat Kohli’s form, which hasn’t yielded fruitful results in the past few months. However, India will be bolstered with the presence of all-rounder Hardik Pandya.
Bangladesh’s Team performance and Winning Probability:
We often consider big teams as the favourites to win the tournament, however, sometimes small teams cleverly steal all the limelight with their surprising performance. Bangladesh is one such side that is capable of doing things that can bring people on their toes.
Although Bangladesh hasn’t won a single Asia Cup so far, they have been the runner-ups of the tournament three times in the last four editions.
Talking about its international performance, Bangladesh has defeated New Zealand and Australia in their respective tours to Bangladesh in the year 2021 which speaks volumes of their cricketing brilliance.
Afghanistan’s Team performance and Winning Probability:
Afghanistan cricket team is still far from getting the status of winning a tournament where teams like India and Pakistan are competing. However, we can never rule any team out of cricket as this sport is utterly unpredictable. The Afghans have done tremendous progress in the past few years to be a consistent face in the ICC rankings. The credit should certainly go to the players who have been performing well on regular basis.
The likes of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Karim Janat, Mohammad Shahzad and Najibullah Zadran are a few players that can pose a serious threat to the opposition. Teams like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh will have to make sure to get rid of the aforementioned players to avoid any loss against Afghanistan.
Sri Lanka’s Team performance and Winning Probability:
The Sri Lankan national cricket team has been in a declining phase since their traditional cricketers left the game. There was a time when Sri Lanka used to win World Cups, however, things have changed drastically over the last 5-6 years.
Sri Lanka is definitely not a favourite to win Asia Cup 2022, however, they can definitely give hiccups to the opposing teams. Recently Sri Lanka defeated Australia in the five matches ODI series, however, faced a defeat in the T20I series by 2-1.
The qualifier team will be one among – UAE, Kuwait, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Performing good in the group stage will be a great achievement for them.
