The fixture between India and Sri Lanka couldn’t turn out to be a high-scoring one as we saw against Pakistan, however, the game had no shortage of thrill and excitement. The surface was tricky to play on and the players had to put in hard yards to score runs and to even pick wickets.
India notched up 213 runs before getting bundled out after winning the toss and opting to bat first. Skipper Rohit Sharma scored a half-century on a surface which had no help for the batters, besides, wicketkeeper KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan played 39 and 33 runs innings respectively.
For Sri Lanka, young bowling all-rounder Dunith Wellalage became the pick of the bowlers. He trapped every Indian batter in his spin web and sent them back to the dressing room one by one. He started with the first breakthrough of Shubman Gill, followed by a big wicket of Virat Kohli and subsequently, he removed dangerous-looking Rohit Sharma.
After breaking the spine of India’s batting, Wellalage went on to pick KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya to complete his fifer. Besides him, Charith Asalanka scalped four wickets while one wicket went to Maheesh Theekshana.
The chase of 214 runs was not going to be easy for Sri Lanka, especially looking at how the pitch was behaving for the spinners. However, to everyone’s surprise, the surface couldn’t extend its helping hand to the Indian spinners as much as it extended to the opponent’s spinners. But, the Indian seamers got decent aid to start off the innings.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohd Siraj commenced the second innings and scalped three wickets in quick succession in the powerplay. While it looked dark for Sri Lanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Aslanka came to rescue the team and stitched a brief partnership to keep the chase on track.
However, Kuldeep Yadav soon removed both the batters. Later Ravindra Jadeja joined the party as he got rid of opposition skipper Dasun Shanaka.
The equation at this moment looked in favour of the Indians, however, young Dunith Wellalage was having a ball of his time. The island nation required 110 runs with four wickets in hand. Dunith Wellalage stitched a strong 61-run partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva to take the contest deep.
However, DdS holed out in 37.3 overs while attempting to go over mid-on, where Shubman Gill was stationed. Jadeja broke the strong partnership and then it was just a cakewalk for the Indian team. Though Wellalage remained unbeaten at one end at a score of 42 runs, the Indian bowlers removed the Sri Lankan tailenders from the other end in quick time. In 41.3 overs, India wrapped up the Sri Lankan innings and fetched a crucial win by 41 runs.
The win put team India ahead of every other team in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4. The two crucial points helped India qualify for the tournament’s final, which will be held on September 17 at the same venue.
