Bangladesh opted to bat first after winning the flip of the coin and fell into their own trap. The pitch behaved weirdly and had enormous help for the bowlers, especially the spinners in the second half of the innings.
None of the batters except for Shanto could play out the Sri Lankan bowlers, who bowled out Bangladesh to a scanty total of 164 runs. The lone survivor for Bangladesh, Shanto scored an impressive 89 runs, but he couldn’t get support from his teammates. Meanwhile, Matheesh Pathirana scalped four wickets besides Maheesh Theekshana got two in his bag.
The chase of a low-scoring game is always a tricky task. The pitch had brought spinners into the game and they were all up to trouble the Sri Lankan batters.
Even Sri Lanka couldn’t get a rampaging start as they lost three of their top batters at 43 runs and the team was on the back foot. However, a rescuing partnership between Samarawickrama and Charith Aslanaka helped Sri Lanka to get close enough to the target and it then became a mere formality for the hosts.
Sri Lanka chased down 164 runs total in 34 overs after losing five wickets and won the contest. With the win, Sri Lanka bagged two crucial points and made a solid position for themselves in the Asia Cup 2023 Points Table.
