Afghanistan had a herculean task in front of them against Sri Lanka and they nearly fulfilled it, but in the end, it was just not meant to be their game. This 2-run loss to get eliminated from the Asia Cup 2023 will take some time to sink in.
Right from the start of the game, everything went in Afghanistan’s favour. The Afghans restricted Sri Lanka to a decent score of 291 runs. The Sri Lankan openers provided a solid kickstart to their innings with 63/0, however, the Afghans fought back with three quick wickets in the span of 23 runs.
Following three quick wickets, Sri Lanka again did the damage control by stitching a 102-run partnership between Charith Asalanka and Kusal Mendis. However, the Afghans made another comeback with four more wickets in quick succession and eventually restricted Sri Lanka to 191 runs total.
In pursuit of 192, Afghanistan lost both its openers cheaply, but the incoming batters were too motivated to feel the pressure of the early fall of wickets. Gulbadin Naib set the tempo with his little cameo of 22 runs followed by Rahmat Shah’s fine 40-ball 45-run knock.
Then came the seasoned Mohammad Nabi who played an innings to be remembered for ages. Nabi took the attack on the Lankan bowlers and scored 65 runs in just 32 deliveries – which apparently is also the fastest half-century by an Afghan player.
By this time the pressure was on Sri Lankan batters as the Afghan chase was rightly on track, but Maheesh Theekshana came to Sri Lanka’s rescue and broke the partnership by removing Mohammad Nabi.
Sri Lanka fought back nicely with two more scalps of Karim Janat and Hashmatullah Shahidi to put the game in a poised situation for both teams.
Rashid Khan then took the game deep and Afghanistan required just one hit to chase down the total in the specified overs to qualify for the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4s. But in the end, Afghanistan succumbed to Sri Lanka lost the battle and was eventually eliminated from the tournament.
With the win, Sri Lanka bagged two crucial points and remained atop their Group Points Table. Below is Asia Cup 2023 Points Table Updated (September 6) after Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka, Super 4 Points Table, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh Qualify, Most Runs, Most Wickets
