Australia’s Squad for ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: Cricket Australia has announced its ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 preliminary squad and it includes many surprises. The cricket board has handed maiden call-ups to a few players while overlooking a couple of senior guys in the team.

Uncapped leggie Spencer Johnson, and all-rounder Aaron Hardie have received maiden call-ups as Australia announced its white ball squads for the upcoming tour of South Africa.

Interestingly, experts reckon Australia’s Squad for the upcoming South Africa and India tour would give a basic idea of how the cricket board wants to approach its World Cup 2023 preparations.

In a major upset, senior batter Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped off the ODI side, effectively ending his ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 dream in India later this year.

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh will lead the Australian T20I side in the South Africa tour, which starts on August 30. Potentially, he could be the leader of the ODI side as well, if Pat Cummins fails to recover on time from his wrist injury.

“(Marsh) has long been a senior player within the white ball structure, with this an opportunity for him to add to his leadership skills at the international level. We look forward to him taking that step in South Africa,” chair of selectors George Bailey said in a statement.

David Warner, Mitchell Starc, Cameron Green and Josh Hazlewood have been rested for the three-game 20-over series with the Proteas. The aforementioned players would return to the ODI side for the 50-over leg.

George Bailey has praised and acknowledged the potential of three debutants – Spencer Johnson, Aaron Hardie and Matthew Short – who have done well in the Big Bash League (BBL).

“Aaron, Spencer and Matt have been outstanding in the BBL and identified as potential national players of the future. This tour is a great opportunity for all three to demonstrate those skills in a national team environment.”
