BCCI announce Mohammad Shami as Bumrah’s replacement for T20 World Cup 2022: In a delayed yet crucial update, injured ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah was officially replaced by his fellow Mohammad Shami for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development on Friday.
Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 due to a back stress-related injury which he suffered during India vs Australia T20I series, last month.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah in a press release said, “The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. Shami has reached Australia and will link up with the squad in Brisbane ahead of the warm-up matches.”
Notably, Shami was infected with covid-19 recently owing to which he had to miss 6 T20I matches against Australia and South Africa combined. Moreover, he had to prove his fitness standards at the NCA to get his Australia departure sanctioned by the officials.
The 32-years old veteran pacer hasn’t played any T20 International game since the last edition of the Men’s T20 World Cup which was held in the UAE. His last T20 assignment came in the month of May when he played for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Tata IPL 2022 final.

The pacer would join the Indian forces in Australia ahead of India’s warm-up matches. Team India is set to play two warm-up games against Australia and New Zealand on October 17 and 19 respectively ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022.
Meanwhile, young pacer Mohammad Siraj and all-rounder Shardul Thakur have been named in the player reserves for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Siraj impressed everyone with his sharp skills in the recently concluded South Africa tour of India. The pacer’s name was certainly on the cards of probable replacement for Jasprit Bumrah but missed by the whisker.
