BCCI Takes Major Step on Ajit Agarkar’s Future After Controversy Over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s Forced Retirement
The BCCI decided on June 18, 2025, to extend Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar’s contract by one year. This decision comes despite speculation surrounding the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
India is transitioning to a younger team for the 2025–27 World Test Championship under Shubman Gill’s captaincy.
While selections like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan have been welcomed, some fans question whether Kohli and Sharma were forced to retire. The BCCI trusts Agarkar to navigate this period of significant change.
BCCI Takes Major Step on Ajit Agarkar’s Future
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket in 2025, surprising many fans. Kohli informed Agarkar in April that he could no longer meet his own high standards.
Agarkar clarified that Kohli’s retirement was his own decision. However, a Dainik Jagran report claims the BCCI told Rohit Sharma his Test career was over, suggesting forced retirement.
Agarkar mentioned both decisions were personal.
Agarkar’s Successful Tenure
Agarkar’s tenure, starting July 2023, has seen India reach the 2023 ODI World Cup final and win two ICC titles. His committee selected young talents like Nitish Kumar Reddy, who scored a Test hundred against Australia, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, now a key opener.
The BCCI values his clear selection process, which prioritizes new players. India’s Test team is in transition after losing 3–1 to Australia, and Agarkar’s role is crucial for the England series starting June 20, 2025.
Retirement Rumors and Team Struggles
Rumors of forced retirements have gone viral on social media, fueling fan debates. India’s recent struggles, including a 3–0 home loss to New Zealand and challenges in Australia, have intensified scrutiny.
A Hindustan Times report from January 2025 states that BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia urged dropping seniors like Kohli and Sharma, while respecting their decisions. Kohli has focused on family, while Rohit’s retirement was described as personal, per Agarkar.
