Tender for New Franchise:
With the wrap of Dream11 IPL2020, Mumbai Indians emerged as the winner of the cash-rich tournament defeating Delhi Capitals to win their fifth title. The Board of Control for Cricket in India is all set for the upcoming IPL 2021. The BCCI has already started planning for the upcoming cash-rich tournament as roughly four months are available before the T20 League.
As the delayed tournament got over, BCCI needs to take two major decisions regarding Mega Auctions and an additional new Franchise. BCCI is likely to add one more team to the basket of 8 teams in the Indian Premier League. The BCCI will release the tender for the new franchise post-Diwali week.
According to TOI, BCCI is planning to introduce the additional 9th team to the IPL in 2021 before introducing another in the 2022 season. As per the reports, BCCI will be releasing the final decision within 72 hours and tender will be released thereafter.
Interested Parties in New Franchise:
Some of the big Business Giant are eyeing to own an IPL team. The Adani Group, the Tata Group, RPG-Sanjiv Goenka Group, and Leading banker Uday Kotak have shown interest. The movie Superstar Salman Khan and Malayalam Star Mohanlal are also keen on joining the IPL as owners. One thing that is confirmed as of now is new franchise will be based in Ahmedabad surely.
Reaction of Existing Franchise:
However, the existing Franchise looks disappointed with the decision of expansion. Reportedly, they have not been informed officially by the board.
- The franchise says the addition of a new franchise in Indian Premier League 2021 will dilute the pool prize which is unlikely to change until the 2023 edition of IPL.
- If a new team gets added to the IPL, the matches from 60 will go up to 76 while the addition of two teams will result in 90 matches. This will be a major concern as the IPL window is too short to adjust these.
- The time for the next IPL is roughly four months from now, it will be difficult to conduct the Mega Auctions in such a short time span.
- Also, some of the teams have strong and stable core formed. It will be hard to scout the talent and participate in the Mega Auctions.
