Two matches were played yesterday where Sylhet Strikers defeated Comilla Victorians in the first match of the day and Rangpur Riders defeated Fortune Barishal in the second. Rangpur Riders and Comilla Victorians are the first two teams to qualify for the eliminator round in the 2024 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League. The Rangpur Riders have been an unstoppable force this season under the leadership of Nurul Hasan and the direction of Shakib-al-Hasan.
19 February Match Review
In a thrilling encounter between Nurul Hasan’s Rangpur Riders and Tamim Iqbal’s Fortune Barishal, the former thrived by just one wicket. Barishal batted first in the evening match and got a flying start to the innings. They put up 110 runs in 11 overs but then Abu Hider ramped over their batting lineup. Abu Hider picked up three wickets in his very first over dismissing both the set batsmen. Following his fifer, Riders restricted Fortune under just 151.
The Riders stood up 74 runs in the first powerplay and were in the driving seat right from the moment. Brandon King wrecked Havoc with his explosive 45 in just 22 balls but Fortune Barishal made a fabulous comeback. Rangpur Riders were 74 for 1 down, and just 3 overs later, 87 for 5 down. Contributions from James Nisham and Dwane Pretorius down the order saved the match for the table topper Rangpur Riders and they won the game in the last over by 1 wicket.
Before that, Sylhet Strikers came up with an upset to Comilla Victorians in the first match of the day. Sylhet had already been knocked out so this was just for pride. Batting first they got off to a decent start but the big part of their runs came out in the second half of the innings. Riding over Howell’s 62 off just 31 balls, they managed to post 177 runs on the board.
It was always going to be difficult to pursue 178, and Litton stood out above the others. Russell suffered because of the hefty asking rate and the fact that he was sent out too late. Hridoy appeared to be a threat, but after he cut one to mid-off, Das was the only one left. Das was under additional pressure as a result of Charles’ struggle to create any rhythm, and Sylhet overcame the reigning champions by a margin of 12 runs.
