ENG vs PAK: Babar Azam to step down as white-ball captain; teammates not convinced by decision – Reports

Babar Azam’s Pakistan cricket team had a torrid time in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023. Things didn’t go their way and they failed to make the cut into the semi-finals of the tournament. This came as a surprise because they were hyped a lot and also were touted as favourites to win.

Pakistan started the tournament pretty well as they won back-to-back games. However, after that, they had a debacle. The Babar Azam’s first loss came against India as they were completely outplayed. After that, they had dreadful outings as they suffered losses against Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa.

This dented their campaign and put them down in the table. Despite winning the two games against Bangladesh and New Zealand, they didn’t have a great chance to qualify. Following their ouster in the tournament, skipper Babar Azam came under a lot of scrutiny as a leader of the side.

There were reports that he would be sacked as a leader of the team as PCB aren’t in favour of him as a leader of the teams. Amid all the reports, the latest development in Geo Super suggested that Babar Azam will step down as the white-ball captain of the team.

Babar Azam has been in constant talks with former PCB chief Ramiz Raja and his close allies. The reports suggested that he’s keen to lead the team in the red-ball cricket. He’s taking the decision, keeping in mind the challenges that will be in front of him ahead.

Babar Azam didn’t have a great tournament as a batter as he registered scores of 5, 10, 50, 18, 74, 50, 66* and 38. He received a lot of criticism for his poor performances as well. It remains to be seen what will be his future as a leader of the team.

A clear picture of Babar Azam’s future as the captain of the team will come once he reaches home. Pakistan failed to reach the semi-final of the tournament end edition 5th on the points table. They also suffered a thrashing 93-run loss against England in their last league game.
