England registered a thumping win over Iran in their opening match of the tournament at the Khalifa International Stadium. Harry Kane’s men played some incredible football as they ran riot against a clueless Iran side, taking all three points and kicking off their campaign in style. Iran, on the other hand, suffered a bitter defeat in their first match. Carlos Quieroz’s men failed to have any sort of impact on the game, which led to them succumbing to a huge defeat in the match.
England started strongly in the game, as they looked fantastic with the ball in their possession. The attackers regularly threatened the Iranian defense with their constant attempts to create chances for a goal. The three lines finally broke open in the 35th minute when a fine cross from Luke Shaw found an unmarked Jude Bellingham in the box. The teenager calmly netted the ball to register his first goal for England.
England doubled their advantage soon after Kieran Trippier’s corner found Harry Maguire, who in turn headed it into Saka’s path. The Arsenal man volleyed a first time shot into the top right corner. Raheem Sterling scored with just a few seconds remaining in the first half to make it 3-0 after he found a neat low cross from Kane and put it into the back of the net with ease.
Saka scored again in the second half after being assisted by Sterling following a poor clearance by Iran. The 22-year-old curled a fine shot to find his team’s fourth. Iran pulled one back in the 65th minute when Mehdi Taremi found Gholizadeh’s threaded ball and scored past Pickford. Rashford scored in the 71st minute after just coming on a few seconds earlier and sending the ball into the bottom corner after being provided a neat pass by Kane.
Grealish made it 6-0 after Wilson, who was through on goal, put it on a plate for him. The game ended with Iran winning a penalty in the 13th minute of extra time and Mehdi Taremi scoring it.
