Final Race to the IPL 2025 Playoffs: Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals pin hopes on one last clash for the last spot in the playoffs
Race to the IPL 2025 Playoffs: IPL 2025 had to be halted midway due to the crisis in the Indian sub-continent amid several threatening situations. With the likes of Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians being the forerunners for the playoff spots, the likes of Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Kolkata Knight Riders were also in contention for the playoffs.
Race to the IPL 2025 Playoffs: Kolkata Knight Riders knocked out
The IPL 2.0 started on the 17th of May, on Saturday, as Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders were contending for the playoff spot; however, the rain gods didn’t favour KKR as the match at the Chinnaswamy was washed out due to rain.
As a result of this, the Kolkata Knight Riders could only manage one shared point, as this was the second time they lost a match owing to rain. KKR were hence knocked out of the race to the playoffs.
KKR became the 4th team after CSK, RR, and SRH to be knocked out of the race to the playoffs.
Race to the IPL 2025 Playoffs: Lucknow Super Giants knocked out
The Lucknow Super Giants have featured in their 12th game of the season and are still left with just 5 wins, hence 10 points. The team could now go on to win the next two games, which would hand them just 14 points, making them distant from a position in the playoffs.
LSG lost their last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, as the SRH side chased the highest ever successful total at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, home ground to the Lucknow Super Giants. They were the 5th side to be knocked out and have back-to-back missed opportunities in the playoffs of consecutive IPL seasons in 2024 and 2025.
Race to the IPL 2025 Playoffs: DC and MI clash at Wankhede
After repeated wins, GT, RCB and PBKS have walked through to the finals; MI and DC are in the race for the final playoff spot left after three teams have already made it to the playoffs.
If the Mumbai Indians go on to win their home game against the Delhi Capitals, they will head to the playoffs even without playing their final league game against the Punjab Kings. Since losing means that DC can manage a maximum of 15 points, they will be knocked out of the race to the playoffs.
On the other hand, the Delhi Capitals securing a win would take both these teams to their last league matches against the Punjab Kings. They would heavily rely on wins against PBKS.
Under such a presumed scenario, if DC wins against PBKS, it ends MI's hopes for the playoffs; however, if Punjab Kings defeats the Capitals and MI can go on to win it, then the Hardik Pandya-led side will advance into the playoffs.
The anticipation is at an all-time high, as teams and IPL fans are thrilled to witness a roller-coaster ride of cricket action at the Wankhede this evening, which seals the fate of the two teams left in contention for the IPL 2025 playoffs.
