The Indian cricket team is going through a period of change where the senior players have only a few years left to serve, and the younger players are coming through the ranks. Another big question in front of the Indian management is the next Indian captain.

Rohit Sharma, who is struggling to get back to his best form in red cricket, might not be serving as the test captain for India for a long period. That might also see the end of his ODI captaincy. That means India have to find out the next leader of the team for ODIs and Tests very soon.

Hence, two potential names came out to be the vice-captains of the team at the moment. Star keeper batter Rishabh Pant, who has served as vice-captain before, is one of them. Pant has also led Team India before. But apart from him, another name was discussed, and that was Indian star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Gautam Gambhir wanted Yashavi Jaiswal as the future captain of Team India.

In the recent meeting held in Mumbai, some important topics were discussed for the betterment of Indian cricket. One of those major topics was related to the future captaincy of the team. However, despite the poor form, Rohit will remain the captain in Tests and ODIs until the board agrees on one strong name.

That is where a new report emerges related to Indian captaincy. As reported by Dainik Jagran, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, who was part of the recent meeting in Mumbai, along with Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, picked Yashasvi Jaiswal to be a potential captain of Team India.

The report further suggests that the Indian board wants to have a stable name as vice-captain, whom they can groom to lead India in the future. Shubman Gill, who has handled this role before, was not considered. That's where Jaiswal came in as a front-runner, taking note that he is still young and has a long way to go.

But then, Pant was another one who was discussed for this game. As he has been part of the team for a while now as compared to Jaiswal, who joined a year back. Pant has experience of leading Team India, as he was captain in a home T20I series against South Africa in 2022.

Apart from that, Pant has also led his franchise in the IPL. But Jaiswal is totally new to this role, but Gambhir threw the name of the Indian opener into the discussion after his success with the team in different situations. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah was the front-runner for the Test captaincy, but looking at his injury-prone body, he can't be a long-term captain. That is why India need a strong vice-captain who can lead in Bumrah's absence.
