How Many Players IPL Teams can Retain ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction?.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday 25th October, opened the bids for the addition of the two new IPL franchises and following which it was confirmed that Ahmedabad and Lucknow will be introduced to the Indian Premier League (IPL) from the upcoming season. Although it seemed like the end of the IPL discussions among the fans, but the case was otherwise.
Soon after the announcement of the two new IPL franchises, the fans jumped over to the talks of the retention policy for the existing eight franchises and a special pick policy for the two new added teams.
The reports from ESPNcricinfo on Thursday revealed that each existing IPL franchise will be able to retain a maximum of four players ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction.
The combination of the four retained players could be either of the two Indian players and two overseas cricketers or three Indian and one overseas cricketer. It is also informed that the use of Right to Match (RTM) cards will be scraped from the upcoming mega auction.

Moreover, the report added that under the special pick policy of BCCI, Ahmedabad and Lucknow can now acquire three cricketers prior to the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. The combination will be two Indian players and an overseas player.
The total cap on the purse value has also seen a rise of INR 5 Crores. Each IPL franchise will have a total purse value of INR 90 Crores. The cost of the retained players will be deducted from the total purse value. The council has yet not revealed the total sum to be used on the retained players. In the 2018 mega IPL auction, the total value of the three retained players was capped at INR 33 Crores.
The Cricketers will be having the liberty to choose whether they want to get retained or need better opportunities with another franchise. If the player decides to work with his previous franchise, then he can be retained, however, if any player opts to find a new franchise, then he will go right under the auction hammer to seek better opportunities for himself.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 Mega Auction are expected to happen from December 2021 to January 2022.
