I took decisions, someone else took its credit, says Ajinkya Rahane: Former Indian captain and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has taken a dig at the former Indian head coach for snatching credits for some of his tough decisions during the last Border Gavaskar Trophy. Rahane said, “someone else took the credit” for decisions he made after India’s nightmare defeat in Sydney against Australia.

Regular captain, Virat Kohli, left the Indian contingent and flew back to India, as he asked for leave following the first test, and the onus was on Ajinkya Rahane to lead India out of the puzzling circumstances against Australia in Down Under.

India’s resurgence in the Border Gavaskar Trophy was confirmed with Rahane’s gritty century in the very next test match to mock the Australians. India won the second test in Melbourne by eight wickets and levelled the series.

“I know what I’ve done there. I don’t need to tell anyone. That’s not my nature to go and take credit. Yes, there were some things that I took the decisions on the field or in the dressing room but someone else took the credit for it,” Rahane said in an episode of ‘Backstage With Boria’.

India’s winning run didn’t stop until they conquered the final frontier, Australia’s fortress, the Gaba. The Aussies had never lost a single test match in Brisbane’s Gaba over the last three decades, but the injury-depleted Indian side had some other plans to demolish the trend and etch their names in history books.

“(What was) important for me was that we won the series. That was a historical series and for me, that was really special.”

Rahane didn’t name any specific individual, but his statements are particularly deemed to be for the then Indian head coach Ravi Shastri. India’s win against Australia was vividly accredited to Shastri’s strong mentorship and he was adjudged as the constructor of the powerful Indian team.

“After that, the reactions from people or those who took credit or what was said on the media, ‘I did this’ or ‘This was my decision’, or ‘This was my call’, it was for them to talk about,” Rahane said.

“From my end, I knew what decisions I took on the field and what decisions I took on my instincts. “Yes, we talked with the management too but I used to laugh about it, that is what I did on the field, I never talk much about myself or praise myself. But what I did there, I knew.”
