India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has moved up to the number 1 spot in the latest ICC Men’s Test Bowling Ranking after his nine-wicket haul in the Visakhapatnam India vs. England test match. This is the first time that an Indian fast bowler has topped the Men’s Test Bowling Rankings chart.
Prior to Bumrah, Kapil Dev, who was second in the Test Bowling Rankings between December 1979 and February 1980, was the highest-ranking player. In 2010, from October to November, former left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan held the third position in the Test rankings.
The Mumbai Indians seamer, who recently became the quickest Indian seamer to pick up 150 Test scalps, rose to the No. 1 position for the very first time in his career thanks to his outstanding figures of 9-91, which helped the Men in Blue defeat the Three Lions by a margin of 106 runs in the second Test match and level the five-match Test Series 1-1.
He was named man of the match in the second test thanks to his nine wicket haul, which also helped him move up three spots in the most recent Test Bowling rankings and unseat fellow countryman Ravichandran Ashwin at the top. Ravi Ashwin, who held the top spot in the rankings since March 2023, was able to pick just three wickets in the second test against England, and he has dropped to the third spot behind South Africa speedster Kagiso Rabada in the recently updated Test Bowling rankings. Rabada continues to remain in second position despite not playing in the two-match Test Series against New Zealand.
Bumrah has become the No. 1 ranked Test Bowler for the first time in his career, as the Indian Test Vice-Captain has never managed to finish above the third position in the rankings despite picking up ten five-wicket hauls in 34 test matches for the Men in Blue. The 30-year-old has so far managed to get two-five wicket hauls in the longest format of the game in 2024, having managed to finish with figures of 6-61 against South Africa in the Cape Town Test in January 2024, and he helped Rohit Sharma and company win the Vizag Test against England with his 6-45.
Talking about the other bowlers, Prabath Jayasuriya, the Sri Lankan spinner, jumped to the sixth spot in the test bowling rankings from the ninth position thanks to his five-wicket haul in the lone test against Afghanistan in Colombo. Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who recently crossed the landmark of 500 test wickets in the three-match Test Series against Pakistan, moved up to the eighth position from number ten. Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and British speedster Ollie Robinson have dropped to the ninth and tenth positions, respectively.
In the Test All-Rounder rankings, Jadeja continues to be at the top of the rankings, while Joe Root has dropped two places to number six after a poor outing in the Vizag Test against the Indians. Axar Patel and Ben Stokes have climbed up to the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
