India had an absolutely perfect campaign this year but it all ended with just one loss in the final. How come a team loses when four players of the team are in the top 10 of the most runs rankings and three in the top 10 most wickets rankings? A team with the most wins in the tournament, a team with the most runs scored in the tournament, a team with the most numbers of individual hundreds, and more but in the end, we were the one left empty-handed following a superb bowling and batting performance by Australians.
Australia won the toss in the finals and opted to bowl first. When asked to Rohit Sharma, he wanted to bat first anyway. Starc proved the decision right as he drew the first blood early in the 5th over dismissing Shubman Gill. Rohit Sharma gave momentum to the Indian innings and propelled India to an 8 runs per over run-rate at the end of 10 overs.
Two quick wickets of Rohit and Shreyas pushed India on the backfoot which resulted in just 35 runs in the next 10 overs. KL Rahul was too cautious as his strike rate was even less than 50 for the most part of his innings. Virat Kohli got his 6th half-century but got played on Cummins. Fighting and tumbling, India somehow managed to reach 240 and set a 241 target for Australia to win the title.
Australia opened the chase with three boundaries in the first over. Warner edged a widish ball against Shami’s first legal delivery of the second over. Marsh nicked Bumrah’s hit-me ball off to the keeper, and a few overs later, Smith decided not to review against LBW decision. After seven overs, the score was 47/3, and all Indian fans were ecstatic—naturally, considering the form of Bumrah and Shami.
Bumrah and Shami disturbed Travis Head for some overs but he managed to escape. He then opted to counter-attack the Indian bowling attack. He smashed a stellar ton and led his team to win another World Cup breaking the trend of the home team winning the World Cup.
