(24 Oct) ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Players with Most Runs and Most Wickets: Afghanistan pulled off another upset and ended the Pakistan jinx in ODI cricket. An excellent all-around show by Afghans notched up a record-shattering clinical 8-wicket victory against Babar Azam-led Pakistan at Chepauk.

A night to remember for Afghanistan! Celebrations were all-around, lap of honor, dance, and fireworks- after all, it was their first ODI win against Pakistan, and that too at the stage of ICC ODI World Cup 2023. After England, Afghanistan demolished another giant of world cricket and that is huge for a team like Afghanistan.
Pakistan have lost three in a bounce now. They haven’t been the same Pakistan after 14th October as they were before. Batters provided the base but it was their fielding and bowling that didn’t stand up to the mark. Babar admitted in the post-match conference- “This hurts us. We had a good total. In the bowling, we aren’t up to the mark because we are not taking wickets in the middle overs. In the World Cup, if you are not good in even one department, then you’ll lose the match. In the field, we didn’t stop boundaries and gave away runs, that cost us.“
Winning to toss, Pakistan opted to bat first and posted a 50+ runs opening stand. This was the first time in this World Cup that Pakistan didn’t lose any wickets in 1st Powerplay. Shafique backed his abilities and notched up an excellent 50 against four Afghan spinners on a Chennai pitch. Rizwan failed this time but a captain’s knock by Babar provided a good base to the middle order.
Saud Shakeel and Shadab Khan added a few runs to the scoreboard but it was Ifthikar’s 40 off 27, that really had to be the most impactful inning for Pakistan. Noor Ahmed picked up 3 wickets and Afghanistan restricted Pakistan to 282. Nothing more than 270 was ever chased by Afghanistan against any team in the World Cup and this was a different challenge altogether when it was MA Chidambaram Surface.
A solid 130-run opening stand by Rahmanullah Gurbaz(65) and Ibrahim Zadran(87) that straight-forward put Pakistan into the backfoot. Rahmat Shah(77*) and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi(48*) ensured no further damage and gifted their nation an unmatchable present.
