The Pakistan Cricket Team has been put in hot water at the ICC T20 World Cup. They are in a situation in which India has been before. Last year, India was defeated by Pakistan and New Zealand in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, and this year it is Pakistan. The Men in Green have a good team with great players. There were just a few things that did not work in their favor. Here is a look at what went wrong for the Pakistan cricket team at the ICC T20 World Cup. Here is an in-depth look:
Pakistan Did Not Have a Reliable Second Spinner at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022:
The Pakistan Cricket Team does not have a second spinner. They relied on Mohammad Nawaz to get the job done and that did not work in their favor. They did have Shadab Khan as their frontline spin wizard but it was Nawaz who was targeted by the opposition. Especially in the game against India. Nawaz was being played because he gives the left-handed batting option. But did Pakistan compromise on the quality of spin in the wake of getting an additional batter? The answer seems to be yes!
Pakistan’s Over-Reliance on their Top Order:
Pakistan Cricket Team seems to be under the pump once their top order is back in the pavilion. The middle order did perform well in the game against India but it was under pressure in the game against Zimbabwe. The over-reliance on the top order was clearly visible. Once the teams got rid of Babar and Rizwan, more than half of the job was done. In fact, even if one of Babar or Rizwan was out, the teams used to get rid of the other batters.
Shadab Khan was expected to do well with the bat but struggled big time. The same was the case with Haider Ali. Haider, who came in with a lot of hype around his name scored a mere 1 run in the first two games.
Pakistan Cricket Team was Dependent on Shaheen Shah Afridi at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022:
The Pakistan Cricket team was also banking on Shaheen Shah Afridi. Afridi who was their star and will be their star for a few years suffered an ACL injury just before the tournament. Whether he was 100% before the game against India or was he pushed? If he was pushed, was it much required or could the management go in with a fitter option? Shaheen post-injury did not play in any major tournament. He was supposed to play in the Asia Cup but struggled to get a game in that tournament too.
