The ICC T20 World Cup 2022 is closing in and all the international teams are finding the perfect formula to make the ideal teams. T20 is a game that has been evolving over the years. It was played with a more structured approach earlier. Earlier teams used to take their time and build the innings. But after the dominance of the West Indies in 2014 and 2016, every team switched to the “SLAM-BANG-ATTACK” approach. So, what are the key factors which will help in making a good team for winning the ICC T20 World Cup? Here is an in-depth look:

A Good Leg Spinner Can be Crucial at the ICC T20 World Cup:

Any successful T20 cricket team across the globe has an integral part called the leg spinner. A good leg spinner can do wonders for the team. He just needs to back himself and flight the ball. If the leg spinner gets attacked the captain mustn’t worry as the leg spinner is his choice of getting a wicket. Over time, leg spinners have made a comeback to international cricket.

Earlier it was Anil Kumble and Shane Warne. The games of the early late 2000s and early 2010s saw off-spinners ruling. We had players like Harbhajan Singh, Rangana Herath, and many others. But leg spinners are back in business now.

Yuzi Chahal, Rashid Khan, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Wanindu Hasaranga are the lethal leg spinners who will play at the ICC T20 World Cup. Adam Zampa and Adil Rashid will also be two players to watch out for. The grounds in Australia are big and there is an evening breeze as well. So, dealing with leg spinners will become more difficult.

Good Finisher will be key for any team at the ICC T20 World Cup:

A good finisher has become a well-defined role in T20 cricket. The role of a finisher was exceptionally vague when this format began. But as the game has progressed, this has become the most valued position in any team. Dinesh Karthik in IPL 2022 for RCB defined how finishing should be done.

The world of cricket witnessed great finishers in the form of MS Dhoni, Michael Bevan, and AB De Villiers. But the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia will also witness some of the best. The list includes Hardik Pandya, Asif Ali, Dasun Shanaka, and Rovman Powell. The finisher’s role is reactive. So, the openers can be proactive and move the game however they want to. But in the case of finishing, the finisher has to deal with the given situation. Matthew Wade was a finisher who won the game purely on finishing skills in the semifinal against Pakistan.

A Good Death Bowler will be Key:

A good death bowler has a lot to offer for any team. By a good death bowler, I do not mean a super quick bowler who can rattle the stumps. We just need a bowler who is accurate with his yorkers, has a well-defined set of variations, and cannot be put under pressure.

An example of a good death bowler was Harshal Patel for RCB in 2021. Apart from the one over to Ravindra Jadeja where he leaked 37 runs, Harshal was elite. That season also included a few games where Harshal was taken for many runs in the initial overs but he showed great temperament. So, a thinking bowler who understands the game is required in such situations.

The top death bowlers who might be seen at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 are Jofra Archer (subject to fitness), Jasprit Bumrah, Lockie Ferguson, and Daniel Sams. Apart from all these names, it will be key to see if India picks T Natarajan because he has also been exceptional.

Good mixture of Experience and Youth:

A good mixture of experience and youth is required. Every team that has got its hand on the ICC T20 World Cup has had a good balance of both. India in 2007 had the senior pros in the form of Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, and MS Dhoni. The fresher faces were Irfan Pathan, Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa, and many others.

When the Australian team won the last World Cup, they also had senior pros like David Warner, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Aaron Finch. But the team also had Adam Zampa, Mitchell Marsh, and many other young players. What happens with this balance is that we have a good balance of thought processes and a daring nature. The youth is there to have fun and they try everything possible, whereas the seniors show them the perfect way.
