Pakistan started the Asia Cup 2023 Tournament as the world’s number 1 ODI team and they are now number 3 at the end of the tournament (for them). Pakistan had a terrible campaign in terms of both luck and performance, playing five matches and winning only two of them. They suffered two defeats—one against India and the other to Sri Lanka—and one match was called off due to weather.
Yesterday, on 14th September, Pakistan lost the virtual semifinal of the Asia Cup 2023 against Sri Lanka by 2 wickets. The match was reduced to 42 overs due to rain interruption. Pakistan batted first and put up the target of 252 runs in 42 overs. Sri Lanka responded with calculated risk and the match went to the last over where Sri Lanka needed 7 runs with a tail-ender in the strike.
The final over responsibilities were placed upon debutant Zaman Khan, but today was Asalanka’s day to be a hero. Asalanka hit a four off the 5th ball and took 2 on the last ball to secure a berth in the final of Asia Cup 2023.
This loss not only cost Pakistan the Asia Cup Final but also the 3 invaluable ranking points in the ICC Team ranking of ODI. They were the joint Number 1 ODI team before this match with 118 rating points but after losing to Sri Lanka, they are number 3 with 115 ranking Points.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, who were 8th down in the table have got a revival and stepped up a rank to 7th in the updated ICC Men’s ODI Ranking after their 2-wicket victory against Pakistan.
India, on the other hand, is unbeaten in this tournament till now, showcasing their domination in the Asian region. They have 116 ranking points after they defeated Sri Lanka 2 days ago and are sitting in the 2nd spot in the ICC Team Ranking of ODIs. They will be eying for the Number 1 spot in the ODIs.
Currently, Australia are the Number 1 ODI side in the world with 118 rating points. They have a 3-match ODI series against India in India just a week before the World Cup starts. That series will be a fight between Number 1 and Number 2 of ODI cricket.
