Indian Players with most runs in World Cup History
Sachin Tendulkar
It’s quite hard to omit Sachin Tendulkar from any list of the batters. It won’t be wrong to say that batting is synonymous with Sachin Tendulkar.
The legendary right-hand batter was part of six World Cup campaigns for Team India, starting in 1992. His quest to lift the ICC World Cup ended in 2011 when India became the champions under the leadership of MS Dhoni.
Tendulkar has averaged over 50 in his overall stint during the World Cup events, which saw him score a massive 2278 runs with the help of six centuries and 15 half-centuries. In fact, Sachin Tendulkar is the leading run-getter in the World Cups not only for India but across the world as well.
Virat Kohli
Any list that features the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, will also have his compatriot Virat Kohli’s feature in it. For quite some time now it has become a race for Virat to surpass Sachin and he is the only batter in the current generation who can achieve this feat.
Former Indian captain Virat Kohli seals the second spot in the decorated list of Indian players with most runs in the World Cup events. Kohli has till now scored 1030 runs after playing out the three ODI World Cups (2011, 2015, and 2019). He will have another go at the World Cup in the coming few days at home.
Sourav Ganguly
The third place has been occupied by southpaw Sourav Ganguly. The former Indian captain has scored 1006 runs in just 21 World Cup matches. He has scored four centuries and three half-centuries throughout his career in the ICC ODI tournaments.
Importantly, Ganguly held the reins of the Indian team when there was a dire need for a strong captain. He not only managed to form the best team but also introduced a gem in MS Dhoni to the world, who went on to lead India to the World Cup trophy in 2011.
Rohit Sharma
Indian captain Rohit Sharma has concreted his place in the list of India’s all-time highest run-getters in the World Cup. He has scored 978 runs so far in the World Cup with the help of six centuries and three half-centuries. If nothing goes drastically wrong for the current Indian captain, he will surpass Sourav Ganguly in the list and could also threaten Virat Kohli’s position.
It is noteworthy that Rohit Sharma scored five centuries in the last edition of the World Cup held in 2019. He scored 648 runs in the tournament and fell just 26 short of becoming the player with the most runs in a single World Cup edition.
Rahul Dravid
The wall of Indian cricket, Rahul Dravid was the hero of the team during the 1999 World Cup. He was India’s most trusted batter during the 199 World Cup.
Dravid, who is currently the head coach of the Indian team, has amassed 860 runs in 22 World Cup matches in his career at an average of 61.42. The batter had scored two centuries and six half-centuries.
