A clinical 10-wicket victory in a game wrapped up in three days reflects the dominance of Australia on their home soil. Even without the services of David Warner, the Australian line-up never looked missing him. West Indies are on a tour of Australia where they are scheduled to play 2 test matches and then two white ball series.
Winning the toss, Pat Cummins opted to bowl first and didn’t have to do much hard work for the first wicket. Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite also seemed clueless against the Australian bowling arsenal and went for cheap. Kirk McKenzie’s 50 and Shamar Joseph’s 36 are the only innings that crossed the 20-run mark and the rest of the batter didn’t even cross 17 runs. Cummins and Hazlewood shared 4-4 wickets and wrapped up the first innings of West Indies in just 188 runs.
Batting second, Australia also lost new opener Steve Smith within 10 overs and Labuschagne under 50 runs. Travis Head had a fabulous 2023 and it seems like he is going to have an even better 2024 as he again smashed a test hundred with a strike rate of ~90. Following his hundred and small but important contributions from the lower order, Australia took a good 95-run lead in the first innings. Medium pacer Justin Greaves came out as the most economical bowler for West Indies and Shamar Joseph took a fifer.
West Indies came out to bat in the second innings and Hazlewood was all over them. He took 4 wickets in his first five overs and West Indies were 4 down for 19. West Indies lost 8 wickets to chase down the trail where Josh Hazlewood took a fifer. West Indies were all out for 120 runs and Australia needed 26 to win the test.
Australia took 40 balls to win the test match by 10 wickets. Usman Khawaja ate a blow on his jaw when Australia was just 1 run behind the victory but Marnus Labuschagne got the winning run.
With this win, Australia now have 66 points and 61.11 PTC points after 9 matches and hence lead the WTC standings. Following them are India. With two wins, one loss, and a draw, India have 54.16 PTC points after 4 matches.
West Indies played a draw against India in July-August and have lost the other two tests. Hence, they are placed 9th with 11.11 PCT points.
