ICC WTC Points Table: In the clash of Lions vs Tigers, the former have won the battle and won it with ease. Sri Lanka outclassed Bangladesh, winning the opening Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium by 328 runs. They also gained ground in the most recent ICC WTC Points Table.

Defeating Bangladesh at home in the test format is not everyone’s cup of tea but the underdogs Sri Lanka did it with style, handling them a big 328-run loss. Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis led the Sri Lankan team with centuries in both innings and it was their partnership that saved Sri Lanka and reverted the match scenarios.

Sri Lanka were asked to bat first and 5 wickets in the first session of Day 1 proved the decision of Bangladesh to be spot on. It was the partnership between Silva and Mendis that took Sri Lanka out of the mud. Both scored their respective centuries and as soon as their wickets fell, Bangladesh took no time to bundle the Lankan innings just inside 280 runs.

Bangladesh got the taste of their own medicine as they also lost 5 wickets within 22 overs. Taijul Islam played a positive innings and Litton Das also looked good till he was on the crease. Bangladesh were bundled up in just 188 runs where Vishwa Fernando took 4 wickets and Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa shared 3 wickets apiece.

Sri Lanka were 92 runs in the lead after the first innings and they continued to add on runs. Skipper Silva and Mendis again weaved a heroic partnership where both smashed crafty centuries to make Sri Lanka’s ground more solid. Mendis got a big 164 and at the end, Sri Lanka reached 418 runs.

It was going to be a difficult assignment for the hosts to pursue 511. The writing was on the wall for them when they were down to 51/6 and they were all at sea. However, Mominul’s perseverance and tenacity allowed him to play a decent innings, holding the Sri Lankan spinners at bay for a considerable amount of time.

Mehidy provided him with strong backing, and once Rajitha dismissed him, Shoriful also got tough. But Rajitha broke the resistance by taking two wickets in two deliveries. Mominul was chasing a century, but Nahid Rana couldn’t keep up as Bangladesh were finally bowled out for 182.
