ICC WTC Points Table: England have finally punished Australia in the 3rd Test of the ongoing Ashes 2023 to remain alive in the iconic battle. Mark Wood and Chris Woakes dealt the final few blows to give their team something to cheer, as they bring up a silver lining following two initial defeats in the five-match series.

All-rounder Chris Woakes drives Mitchell Starc’s delivery for a boundary to take England over the line against Australia in the third Test at Headingley. With the impressive comeback, England are alive and kicking in the series, which has two games remaining, after going 2 down in the first two games. The win has also led England to open their account in the ICC WTC Points Table 2023-25.

England hunted down 254 run target in the fourth innings with young Harry Brook dealing most of the damage to Australia. Brook (75 runs) spearheaded the chase and remained firm despite seeing his mates perish at the other end.

It wasn’t a cakewalk for England, as they had multiple moments of ebbs and flows throughout the game. The Englishmen opened day four with no casualties in the chase of 254 runs in the final innings and they looked poised to easily get through the chase. However, a test never ends without pushing teams into uncomfortable situations.

England got reduced to 171 for six wickets with Harry Brook and Chris Woakes in the middle. Australia were back into the game, with Mitchell Starc breathing fire at his end, who had removed Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow in two of his previous overs. However, Brook once again proved why he is rated so highly by the experts.

Harry Brook and Chris Woakes re-structured the innings when England needed 80 runs with four wickets in hand and took their side close to the win. When it looked like a smooth ride for England to win the test, Starc brought another twist in the game by dismissing Harry Brook at a score of 75 runs. England were seven down in 230 runs score with 24 runs still to get.

The incoming batter Mark Wood played a few aggressive shots, which went over the boundary rope, while Chris Woakes did the rest of the work to take England home in the third test at Headingley.

Earlier in the game, Australia had amassed 263 runs in the first innings following Mitchell Marsh’s brilliant comeback century. In response, England scored 237 runs and trailed by 26 runs. Australia then 224 runs to their lead in their second innings, effectively taking their score to 250.

In pursuit of 250 runs total, England scored 254 runs to win the do-or-die test match and remain alive in the five-match Ashes series. England have managed to bag 10 points against their name in the ICC WTC Points Table. Meanwhile, Australia already have 22 points after sealing two victories at the start of the Ashes 2023.
