For almost two months, the Australian cricket team has been in India. They suffered defeats in both the ODI and T20I series, but in between they triumphed in the ODI World Cup, adding yet another award to an already bulging trophy cabinet. Australia, the reigning ODI and Test champions, will now concentrate on their domestic campaign.
Just 96 hours after the ODI World Cup Final, the finalists were engaged in a T20I series where India came out victorious in the first game of the five-match T20I series. Australia posted a 200+ runs target and India chased it down with 2 wickets and one ball left.
India batted first in the second T20I and posted a mammoth total of 235 and won the match by over 40 runs. Another powerful batting show by India in the third T20I where India posted 222 runs in 20 overs but Australia chased down this target in the last ball. Then it was Raipur, where India sealed the series with a 20-odd runs victory on a comparatively slower wicket.
Australia won the flip of the coin and opted to bowl first in the last T20I. India got off to a flying start but also lost both openers within 33 runs in 4.3 overs. Skipper Surya Kumar Yadav and southpaw Rinku Singh also got out early and then Shreyas Iyer got his ground strong with Jitesh Sharma and Axar Patel. India posted a below-par 161-run target in front of Australia where were out to play for their pride.
Australia lost their first wicket too early and then lost the in-form Travis Head to 5 overs. Ben McDermott and Tim David combined for a 45-run partnership. It seemed they would make the series 3-2 but all it lasted as soon as Tim David fell for an arm ball by Axar Patel. Australia kept losing wickets and the run rate went down with the asking rate peaking high with each ball being bowled.
Mathew Wade was the last hope for Australia when Australia needed 10 off the last over but he failed to accomplish that and got caught in the third ball of the over. Arshdeep bowled an excellent final over and gave just 3 runs as a result, India won the match by 6 runs.
