IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah Makes WTC History, Becomes First Fast Bowler to Achieve Major Milestone at Leeds

Jasprit Bumrah makes WTC history by becoming the first fast bowler to claim 11 five-wicket hauls in the World Test Championship during the 1st Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, on June 22, 2025.

His stellar 5/83 in England’s first innings of 465 helped India secure a 6-run lead after scoring 471. Bumrah also became the first Asian to reach 150 Test wickets in SENA countries, surpassing Wasim Akram.

Fans called him India’s “Kohinoor,” and Dinesh Karthik called his performance a masterclass.

Jasprit Bumrah Makes WTC History in IND vs ENG 1st Test

Jasprit Bumrah makes WTC history and etches another record by becoming the first Asian to claim 150 Test wickets in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). His dismissal of Duckett took him past Wasim Akram’s 146 wickets.

In just 32 Tests in SENA, Bumrah achieved this feat, joining Akram and Lasith Malinga as the only Asians with 10 five-wicket hauls there. Dinesh Karthik on India Today called him “India’s Kohinoor” for shining in tough conditions.

Bumrah’s Impact on Day 2 and 3

On Day 2, Bumrah’s 3/48, including Crawley’s early wicket, gave India control, though England reached 209/3. On Day 3, he claimed the final two wickets, finishing with 5/83, as England fell for 465.

India’s 6-run lead came despite other bowlers struggling, with Prasidh Krishna taking three wickets. Karthik criticized India’s reliance on Bumrah, noting his 13 overs on Day 2 showed a gap with others. Bumrah’s brilliance kept the Test balanced, with India batting again on Day 3.

Equals Kapil Dev’s Away Record

Jasprit Bumrah makes WTC history and matches Kapil Dev’s record for the most five-wicket hauls (12) by an Indian in away Tests. His 14th overall fifer, with 12 abroad, came in just 34 Tests compared to Kapil’s 66.

This Leeds haul was his third in England, a first for an Indian pacer. Posts on X celebrated, with one saying, “Bumrah joins Kapil as India’s greatest!” His 210 Test wickets at a 19.33 average cement his legacy.

Why Bumrah Stands Out

Bumrah’s unique style and late ball release make him tough, as Ben Duckett said, noting he gives “no hints” on his balls. His 5/83, despite team mistakes, showed his strength.

Jasprit Bumrah makes WTC history as the only fast bowler with 11 five-wicket hauls, proving he’s the best in the 2025-27 WTC cycle.

With India’s young team led by Gill, Bumrah’s role is huge.
