IND vs NZ Update: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Tuesday that Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the forthcoming ODI series owing to a back injury. This news broke from Hyderabad, prior to the start of the India vs. New Zealand ODI series.
Iyer, who has recently struggled to capitalize on many good starts, will travel to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment. The BCCI did not reveal the proper degree of the injury, and the NCA’s tests will determine how long he will be missing.

Iyer scored 28, 28, and 38 runs in the three innings he played during the ODI series against Sri Lanka, however, he failed to elevate his performance. Iyer got his back injured, forcing the newly-appointed senior selection committee to name Rajat Patidar as his replacement. Rajat Patidar has scored 1648 runs in 50 innings in his List A career at an average of 34.33 and at a strike rate of 97.5 with the highest score of 158.
Iyer’s replacement, Rajat Patidar, has never featured for India on the field but has previously been a part of the limited-overs squads. The right-hander from Madhya Pradesh won’t probably get to make his series debut in the first two games because Iyer’s injury provides Suryakumar Yadav the opportunity.
BCCI in the MEDIA ADVISORY said, “Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury. He will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Rajat Patidar as a replacement for Shreyas Iyer. India play the first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad on 18th January 2023.”
India’s updated ODI squad against New Zealand: Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya (VC), Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan (wk), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, KS Bharat (wk), Rajat Patidar, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik.
