IND vs SA: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced India’s comprehensive tour of South Africa in December-January 2023. The all-format tour will be India’s first major assignment following the completion of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.
The India tour of South Africa 2023 will begin with the T20I leg in Durban on December 10. The second and third fixtures of the IND vs SA T20I series will be held at Gqeberha and Johannesburg on December 12 and 14 respectively.
The T20I series will be followed by three-match India vs South Africa ODI series which begins at Johannesburg on December 17. The entertainment then shifts to Gqeberha and Paarl for the final two ODI games of the three-match India vs South Africa ODI series.
The tour will conclude with two-match test series, called the Gandhi-Mandela Trophy, between India and South Africa the first of which will be held in Centurian, starting December 26. The second game of the test leg will be staged at Cape Town, starting January 03.
While the two-match IND vs SA test series will be India’s second ICC World Test Championship (WTC) assignment in the 2023-25 cycle, South Africa will kickstart their WTC run with the India series itself at home.
In a joint statement, the BCCI and Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed the fixtures. “The tour will begin with a three-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series and will culminate with the Freedom Series for Gandhi-Mandela Trophy involving two Tests.”
“The Freedom Series is significant not just because it features two excellent Test teams, but also because it honours Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, two great leaders who shaped our respective nations, and the world around them.”
The two-match test series between India and South Africa is scheduled keeping in mind the Christmas Day and New Year Celebrations. The Boxing Day test, which begins on December 26, is a huge event and so is New Year Test.
“The Boxing Day Test and the New Year Test are amongst the most important fixtures on the international cricket calendar and the schedule has been planned particularly around these marquee dates. India has always received strong support in South Africa, and I am confident that fans will be treated to some enthralling contests with no shortage of intensity,” said Jay Shah, honourable BCCI secretary.
