The Indian batter during his 88-run knock broke Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s decade-long record in the One Day Internationals (ODI).

Virat Kohli, during his stay at the crease against Sri Lanka, completed 1000 runs in the ODIs in calendar year 2023. This was Virat’s 8th time crossing the 1000 run mark in the 50-over format in a calendar year.

With another milestone, Virat surpassed legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most times scoring more than 1000 runs in the ODIs in a calendar year. While Sachin had breached the 1000 run mark seven times during his career, Virat has now got eight such feats.

Virat Kohli has gone past the 1000 run mark in the years – 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2023, while Sachin Tendulkar had reached the aforementioned milestones in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2007.

However, if we talk about scoring the most runs in a calendar year, Sachin Tendulkar still holds an edge over any other batter, having scored 1,894 runs in 1998. The second best in the coveted list is Sourav Ganguly’s 1,767 in the year 1999.

IND vs SL: Virat Kohli surpasses Sangakkara with 118th Fifty

In another record, Virat Kohli surpassed former Sri Lankan batter Kumar Sangakkara after he hit his career’s 118th ODI half-century. The Indian batter hit a run-a-ball half-century during the India vs Sri Lanka game. He is now only second to Rahul Dravid, who has scored 145 half-centuries in his career.

However, 34-year-old Virat Kohli couldn’t complete his 49th ODI century as he was dismissed by Dilshan Madhushanka 12 runs shy of his well-deserved century. Kohli’s quest to equal Sachin’s 49 ODI tons record remains incomplete with the dismissal.
