India vs England: The visitors were left stunned and frustrated with the 50-50 umpiring chances which didn’t go their way on day 1 of the Pink ball test at Narendra Modi Stadium against India.

TV Umpire overturned the on-field umpires ‘out’ decision of Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma’s stumping appeal at the end of Day 1.

When English opener Zak Crawley was asked about this he said, “It’s frustrating for us. When the game is going far from us those 50-50 chances matter a lot. We wanted that to be in our favour but it didn’t go well. It’s certainly not our day at play.”

“When we were batting, Jack was caught by Pujara and the TV Umpire saw it from different angles to make a confirmed decision. When we were fielding it seemed like they looked at it from one angle. That’s where the frustrations lie,” he added.

“I can’t say whether they were out or not out, but I think the frustrations lie with not checking more thoroughly.”

Zak Crawley when asked about Joe Root’s conversation with Umpire Nitin Menon and Anil Chaudhary, he said, “I would like to answer but I’ll leave that to the captain and senior players. As a young player, I’ll keep my nose out of that situation, that’s for Joe, I think.”

Day 1 Report:

Root choose to bat in the rank turner and it didn’t go their way as Indian restricted the visitors for 112 runs. Spinner Axar Patel ran through England’s lineup and picked 6 wickets. Ravi Ashwin got three while Ishant Sharma picked one.

For India, Rohit Sharma scored a half-century and still in the middle along with vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane. Jack Leach got Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli while Jofra Archer picked Shubman Gills’s wicket.

At the end of Day 1, India are trailing by 13 runs with a score of 99 for 3.

“It was easy to bat against the seamers, never easy to bat against spinners in these conditions. We should have got a few runs. if 200 would have been a nice and competitive score,” the 23-year-old, who made 53 off 84 balls, said.

Zak Crawley backed England’s decision to play three seamers and only one spinner in the rank turner.

“It is above my pay scale. These seamers are really brilliant and we back them on any surface.”

“If we had got a few more runs it might have helped our bowlers out a lot more. At the moment we are probably behind the game but there is plenty of time to fight back with our bowling line-up.”
