IPL: Highest bid players from every edition of the IPL from 2008-2024

0

The IPL, or the widely renowned league known as the Indian Premier League, is not some other T20 cricket league. Its grandeur and success have given a huge platform for players who have gone on to achieve great heights in international cricket.

However, aside from the main part of the competition, what draws the attention of the fans and spectators lies in the awstrucking mega-auction of the IPL. Players from the Indian subcontinent as well as around the globe are bought into the sides with a huge, staggering amount, which often shakes up the cricket world.

Sometimes, the most anticipated big names alongside the most uncanny picks often acquire jaw-dropping net worths and auction bids, which only adds to the list of thrills to the IPL.

Let’s have a look at top-notch expensive bids in IPL history (year-wise):

2008: MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings)

The very first season of the world’s most heavily invested T20 league, the IPL inaugural season, marked a historic bid on Indian veteran Captain Cool. MS Dhoni came from an iconic World T20 triumph in 2007, following which he was a record buy for 9.5 crore INR.

2009: Kevin Pietersen (Royal Challengers Bangalore) and Andrew Flintoff (Chennai Super Kings)

The two English giants were the much anticipated big buys in the second auction, as Kevin Pietersen made his debut in the IPL and went on to be a star for RCB. At the same time, CSK drafted in the all-rounder, though they could not produce the desired gem of a season after both were bought at a hefty price of 9.8 crore INR.

2010: Shane Bond (Kolkata Knight Riders) and Kieron Pollard (Mumbai Indians)

Trailing back to 2010, West Indian all-rounder, then a rising talent, and New Zealand veteran pace bowler Bond were picked up for a decent INR 4.8 crore. Bond is often considered a matchwinner and was hence picked by Knight Riders.

On the other hand, Pollard has since then never parted ways with the Mumbai Indians, as he startled with his saga of big-hitting prominence and the tag of a game changer.

2011: Gautam Gambhir (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Gambhir was then the costliest of players during his move from Delhi Daredevils to the Kolkata Knight Riders. This was probably Kolkata’s best buy since the player turned the fortunes of KKR, as he single-handedly batted well and led them to two IPL trophies in 2012 and 2014. He was brought in for a huge 14.9 crore INR.

2012: Ravindra Jadeja (Chennai Super Kings)

The veteran Indian all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja, emerged as the talk of the town since he made amazing contributions for the Rajasthan Royals in the first 2 seasons of the IPL, as he also found a way into the Indian team. Jadeja bought it for 12.8 crore INR, which was the most justified bid as he to date remains a crucial part of the franchise.

2013: Glenn Maxwell (Mumbai Indians)

Owing to his stunning race of form for Australia and in the BBL, Maxwell was a player in whom many teams had shown interest then and was finally included in the Mumbai Indians camp for a decent INR 6.3 crore.

2014: Yuvraj Singh (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

The legendary King of Sixes made a comeback to the IPL after a long struggle with cancer, which he battled during the 2011 World Cup. Owing to his greatness, RCB included him for a huge 14 crore INR.

2015: Yuvraj Singh (Delhi Daredevils)

Yuvraj Singh did many wonders for the Royal Challengers in the previous edition, as it motivated others to go even bigger as Daredevils included him for a whopping INR 16 crores.

2016: Shane Watson (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Shane Watson was the most elusive player in the Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals in 2008, and since then he served the geniuses for the RR before his special antics as a batter and bowler, and after his international retirement he was included for 9.5 crores INR by the Royal Challengers.

2017: Ben Stokes (Rising Pune Supergiants)

After the retirement of the great Shane Watson, Ben Stokes emerged as the greatest of World all-rounders, and hence, for the latest franchise, Supergiants, he was bought in for a huge 14.5 crore.

2018: Ben Stokes (Rajasthan Royals)

After playing a wonderful role in the Steven Smith-led Supergiants side, the dissolution of the two teams brought Stokes back to the Rajasthan Royals for a humongous 12.5 crore, and he also emerged as the MVP for the Royals.

2019: Jaydev Unadkat (Rajasthan Royals) and Varun Chakravarthy (Kings XI Punjab)

The most surprising mini-auction IPL had ever witnessed, as Unadkat, the Indian uncapped pacer, and even more inexperienced uncapped spinner Varun Chakravarthy were included in the Royals and Kings lineup at a whopping INR 8.4 crore.

2020: Pat Cummins (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Pat Cummins, the Australian skipper, set a benchmark for overseas players in the IPL as he emerged as the costliest-ever player when Knight Riders spent an unforgettable 15.5 crore to include the likes of the big all-rounder.

2021: Chris Morris (Rajasthan Royals)

One of the surprising inclusions into the side was Protea all-rounder Chris Morris, who had shown much of his class for both Delhi Daredevils and the Rajasthan Royals. The Royals again acquired him after releasing him for a lump sum amount of INR 16.25 crore, a record-breaking bid.

2022: Ishan Kishan (Mumbai Indians)

Promising Indian wicketkeeper who played an amazing role in their immense success that they drew in the Mumbai Indians camp while starring for them previously in 2020 as well as 2021, brought him glory with a whopping INR 15.25 crore net value.

2023: Sam Curran (Punjab Kings)

After playing a major role in England’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2022, when Sam Curran was also the Player of the Tournament, he turned heads in the IPL as the Punjab Kings included him for a record 18.5 crore, a record that didn’t last long though.

2024: Mitchell Starc (Kolkata Knight Riders)

The well-renowned Australian speedster was bought in as he shattered all records and emerged to amaze all when Gambhir splurged a huge sun of INR 24.75 crore on the Aussie World Cup-winning star. Starc’s contribution was vital to KKR’s title triumph in 2024.

5 underrated players who might be picked in the IPL 2025 mega-auction

IPL 2025: Over the years, the Indian Premier League has served as a common platform for players worldwide, allowing them to establish themselves in international franchise cricket after making their debut in the league.

Many players, even before their commanding debut in international cricket, have been recognized in the IPL, and their stunning shows in the IPL have placed them into their national teams. The likes of players like Glenn Maxwell, Tristan Stubbs, and Sunil Narine have been among the world’s most recognized talents who have been hand-picked owing to their special performances in the different editions of the IPL.

Alongside these overseas superstars, countless Indian talents have made their way into the Indian team from being placed in IPL teams, which include the likes of Indian genius all-rounder Hardik Pandya, current skipper Suryakumar Yadav, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, and the latest inclusions like Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, and Mayank Yadav.

Hence, let’s take a look at some of the most underrated players who can be included by the franchises, and they might make a revolution in their career.

Top 5 underrated players who can be crucial picks in IPL 2025 mega-auction

Marco Jansen

The Protea all-rounder has not been included in recent times in the national side, since the Proteas are looking to load an entirely new setup since the T20 World Cup. He was last seen in the World Cup final against India.

Jansen has previously starred for SRH, and not many teams have an all-rounder of his quality. Jansen can share the new ball and can also be a very effective run-scorer down the order who can also add quick runs while playing cameos.

Glenn Phillips

Phillips has been New Zealand’s top-choice all-rounder option across all formats, as he surpassed the likes of Michael Bracewell as well as Mitchell Santner, not only in terms of runs scored but also the number of wickets he has starred for.

Phillips is one of the most sound all-rounders who can be an asset in the IPL, as he can often be effective with his off-spin, while also being known as one of the most aggressive players on any team.

Will Jacks

English opener, Jack has been for long a considerable face for global franchises around the world. Will Jacks is often considered one of the finest top-order batters, with stunning roles played as an opener or a batsman among the top 3.

Last time around, he was seen playing for the Royal Challengers and was not seen much sharing the ball; however, for England as well as other franchises in global leagues, he has proved himself effective with the ball.

Noor Ahmed

Noor Ahmed, the Afghan rising spinner, often makes his place into the side after Mujeeb has been often turned down since his dismal show in the World Cup 2023. Noor has been an often-featured player for the Gujarat Titans.

A spinner of Noor’s quality would be in high demand in the Indian subcontinent, as several teams would be in the hunt for a spinner of this much class. Franchises like Mumbai Indians, SRH, and Punjab Kings have faced serious trouble in the spin department.

Sikander Raza

Zimbabwe all-rounder and current skipper of the national side should be the perfect example of an underrated player, as Raza has been the most special performer one can be across all white-ball formats.

Raza is one of the finest middle-order batters, while he is also the best among off-spinners, and his quality as a bowler is undoubtedly profound. Previously picked by PBKS for a minor 50 lakh INR only, and still, he served to the best of his level while replacing the injured Liam Livingstone from the first half of the competition.

This time around, his price might take a new level, owing to the brilliance he brings with him and the demand for an all-rounder for several teams.

Pakistan vs England: Pakistan Post 328 runs on the board as Shan Masood dominates with a century in the opening-test

0

Pakistan vs England: The first day of the opening Test-Match between Pakistan and England came to an exciting end with the Shaheens posting a score of 328-4 on the board.

Thanks to skipper Shan Masood’s century on the first day of play at the Multan Cricket Stadium, the Green Shirts rebounded excellently in the first Test against England on Monday.

Having won the toss and chosen to bat first, the national team was dealt an early setback when opener Saim Ayub (4) was caught behind off the bowling of Gus Atkinson.

However, captain Shan Masood and opening batter Abdullah Shafique stitched a partnership of 114 runs for the 2nd wicket to help their team reach a score of 122-1 at lunch.

The 1st day of the 1st test ended with Pakistan putting up a score of 328-4 on the board with the duo of Naseem Shah (0 runs in 3 deliveries) and Saud Shakeel (35* runs in 72 balls) unbeaten at the crease.

The ongoing three-match Test-Series between Pakistan and England is a part of ICC’s WTC (World Test Championship) 2023-2025 cycle.

Earlier in the game, Shan was adjudged LBW by the umpire off the bowling of debutant pacer Brydon Carse. However, the Pakistani skipper took a review immediately and his decision payed off as the verdict got overturned as replays showed that the ball had pitched outside the leg-stump.

Shan then ran two quick runs and brought up his half-century in 43 deliveries.

Opener Abdullah Shafique was given a lifeline when he was batting on 35 runs as he opted to take a risky-single and Ollie Pope, the stand-in skipper of England, missed the stumps by a very small margin with his direct throw.

Despite missing the run-out opportunity, Pope made up for it as he caught the catch of Shafique in the 60th over off Atkinson as the opener walked back to the pavilion after scoring 102 runs in 184 deliveries, which included 10 fours and two huge maximums.

Pakistan’s other opener Saim Ayub didn’t have a good outing with the bat as he made just four runs and got out early.

Moreover, the best-batter of the day, Shan Masood was dismissed by Jack Leach in the 63rd over, after scoring 151 runs in 177 deliveries, with the help of 13 fours and two maximums.

Babar Azam, batting at number four, came on the crease with the motive of scoring 50+ runs but ended up scoring just 30 runs in 71 deliveries as Chris Woakes got the better of him by catching him plumb in front of the stumps.

The duo of Jack Leach and Chris Woakes picked up a wicket each while fast-bowling All Rounder Gus Atkinson dismissed two batters.

Top all-rounders who can make it big in the IPL 2025 mega-auction

The IPL 2025 auction is peeking around the corner, and hence every team will be awaited to issue their retention list. However, many such players might be released ahead of the auction despite their immense value, this is due to the limited number of retentions made available by the IPL committee to the franchises.

The shortest format of cricket has always produced a huge demand for all-rounders, players who can bat and deliver quality with the ball as well. Many such players have starred in the previous editions of the Indian Premier League and have contributed immensely to the domination of several teams.

Likely all-rounders like Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Hardik Pandya, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell and many such greats donned the immensely great league in the world.

Top all-rounders who can be the big buys in the mega-auction:

Liam Livingstone

Fine English all-rounder, England’s most stunning and currently ICC-ranked World no.1 all-rounder, Liam Livingstone climbed above many after his special performances with both bat and ball against Australia in the T20I series.

Livingstone in recent times has bettered with the ball, as he has emerged as a quality leg-spinner and a major wicket-taking option, while he is also a great finisher with the bat.

Sam Curran

The English all-rounder was IPL’s costliest ever player in the history of the competition until the two World Cup winners were bought for a whopping 20.5 crores and 24.75 crores INR in the last auction.

Sam Curran has been an ever-evolving cricketer, as he has performed with the bat at all phases in the batting order, while he has scored quick runs at all positions from being a batter at no.3 to the role of a finisher down the order. Curran has often been seen indulging in expert spells as a left-arm medium pacer and has extracted wickets.

Will Jacks

Another English name in the list, the spin bowling all-rounder is a stunning player who plays across all global franchise-level games. Jacks has often been seen playing as an opener, just like he scored a splendid century in the last season for the RCB.

Jacks can also be a handy all-rounder as he can bowl some overs of quality off-spin and is especially useful on tracks that tend to facilitate spin.

Cameron Green

Green, the lanky-built Australian all-rounder from Western Australia, was earlier a renowned test cricketer, however, as of now he has also been relished in limited-overs cricket as well. Green was first brought into the IPL by the Mumbai Indians and in his very first season he was bought for a huge sum of 17.5 Crores INR.

Though his last season after his move to RCB didn’t go as planned, he played stunningly for Australia and will again be seen in a new franchise probably in another IPL edition. Yet Green might be the target of many franchises who are in the quest for an all-rounder who comes to bat in the middle-order.

Wanindu Hasaranga

Hasaranga once reckoned as the best spinner in T20 cricket, now after suffering repetitive injuries has faced a backlash in their performance. Hasaranga the Lankan skipper stepped down from his position, as he emerged as their best spinning option.

Hasaranga can also score quick runs down the order, as Hasaranga is a good slogger whenever he comes down the order, often recognised for playing quick and short cameos, of 20s and 30s down the order.

Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: How can India qualify for the semi-finals ahead of their all-important clash vs Pakistan

Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: How can India qualify for the semi-finals ahead of their all-important clash vs Pakistan: Team India, under the leadership of experienced skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, suffered an embarrassing defeat by a margin of 58 runs in their opening-encounter of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 versus New Zealand on Friday in the city of Dubai. This defeat versus the White Ferns has significantly affected the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team’s chances of advancing to the semi-finals for the fourth successive time.

Moreover getting to the semi-finals will not be that easy since they are a part of Group A, often known as the “Group-of-Death,” which includes Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the reigning champions Australia.

The Women in Blue were asked to bowl first by New Zealand on Friday evening. The opening duo of Georgia Plimmer and Suzie Bates played an aggressive brand of Cricket in the first six overs and helped their team reach a score of 55-0 in the powerplay.

Asha Sobhana (1-22), Arundhati Reddy (1-28), and Renuka Singh (2-27) were the only bowlers who performed well for India in their encounter versus the Sophie Devine-led team. Devine led her team from the front as her fifty allowed her team to put up a good score of 160 runs on the board.

The White Ferns’ incredible bowling assault left the majority of Indian batters completely bewildered. Harmanpreet Kaur’s 15 runs was the highest score of the Indian batting unit on Friday when New Zealand bowled the Indians out for a mere 102 runs. The pace bowling duo of Lea Tahuhu (3-15) and Rosemary Mair (4-19) were the best New Zealand bowlers of the night as they ran through the Indian batting order.

A 58-runs defeat to Sophie Devine-led New Zealand means the Indian Cricket Team find themselves sitting at the fourth spot in the Group A points standing currently, with a really poor Net-Run-Rate (NRR) of -2.900.

The Mighty Australians, are sitting at the second position after securing a comfortable victory over Sri Lanka in their opening encounter of the competition.

Undoubtedly, India has to win their remaining two group matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in-order to stay alive in the race of advancing to the semi-finals. If the Women in Blue secure convincing victories over both the teams, then their negative Net-Run-Rate will improve significantly and those four points would prove to be crucial as well.

If Harmanpreet Kaur & Co beat Pakistan and Sri Lanka by large-margins and also overcome the challenge posed by Australia in their last group game, then they will be in a strong-position to qualify for the semi-finals.

If India defeats Pakistan & Sri Lanka but lose versus the Mighty Australians, then they will require New Zealand to help them out by losing in two of their remaining three group stage matches. The two teams that qualify for the semi-finals will be determined based on Net-Run-Rate.

3 Errors India Must Correct to Defeat Pakistan in Crucial Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Encounter

3 Errors India Must Correct to Beat Pakistan in Crucial Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Encounter: The Indian Women’s National Cricket Team, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur suffered a humiliating defeat versus New Zealand in their opening Women’s T20 World Cup encounter on Friday evening. The 2020 runners-up lost by a big margin of 58 runs, which has made their route of advancing to the knockout-stage difficult.

The fielding was not up to the mark, the bowling was mediocre, and the batters showed little enthusiasm to chase down the score of 161 runs. Nothing went in the favour of Team India and now they find themselves in a difficult situation in a challenging group.

However, the Women in Blue’s hopes of qualifying for the semis are not crushed yet and they have to treat all of their remaining group stage encounters as must-win ones. They will square off against fierce-rivals Pakistan in their next fixture and we will take a look at three errors the Indians must correct to defeat Pakistan.

3) Captaincy-related mistakes must be reduced

Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t have a good match as a captain and with the bat as well versus New Zealand. Her bowling-change decisions were dubious and the White Ferns took full advantage of the captaincy errors.

Right-arm seamer Pooja Vastrakar (0-9) just bowled a single over and she wasn’t allowed to complete her full quota of four overs despite bowling well. Furthermore, off-spinner Deepti Sharma, who had an abysmal outing with the ball, was allowed to complete her full quota of four overs and it turned out to be a gift in disguise for the Sophie Devine-led team.

In four overs, the 27-year-old gave away 45 runs without picking up a single wicket. Moreover, the fielding-placements were not up to the mark and Kaur played a conservative game as the skipper, which let New Zealand win the match handily. As the leader of the team, she must be alert against Pakistan otherwise India may get eliminated from the competition after just two matches.

2) Work on improvising the level of fielding

Team India’s fielding level versus New Zealand was abysmal which created a lot of disappointment among the supporters. A lot of easy-catching opportunities were dropped, and it cost the Women in Blue heavily against the Sophie Devine-led New Zealand.

Versus Pakistan, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team cannot afford to make the same mistakes. Their Asian counterparts played in a superb manner versus Sri Lanka, and are full of confidence, therefore, the Women in Blue need to be smart on the field to avoid giving away precious runs.

1) Senior batters should take responsibility in crucial matches.

Experienced senior batters Shafali Verma (12 runs in 13 balls), captain Harmanpreet Kaur (15 runs in 14 balls), and Shafali Verma (2 runs in 4 balls) failed to score big runs with the bat and this is where the Indian Cricket Team lost their way in the chase.

We’ve seen Indian players struggle in big games before, and here was a chance to prove everybody incorrect. A target of 161 runs was always going to be difficult to chase down against a strong opposition bowling attack, but the Indian batsmen surrendered during the power play, allowing New Zealand to humiliate them. The batting needs to be refreshed before facing Pakistan, and the senior batters must accept responsibility for delivering results.
