Why MS Dhoni will be unable to participate in Legends League Cricket (Explained)

Why MS Dhoni will be unable to participate in Legends League Cricket (Explained): Indian Cricket Team’s legendary skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from International-Cricket on the 15th of August, 2020, but he continues to ply his trade for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL.

While MSD hasn’t given any clue about his future in the IPL yet, some news are reportedly saying that the 43-year-old Wicketkeeper Batsman could end up playing yet another season of the IPL for the Chennai-based franchise.

The former Indian skipper relinquished his CSK captaincy duties before the beginning of IPL 2024 and handed over the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad.

The veteran only plays in the IPL and fans across the country plead to watch him play on the Cricket field. He hasn’t featured in Domestic-Cricket matches since 2017.

There’s a reason why Dhoni cannot participate in the ongoing edition of the Legends League Cricket (LLC) or any other Cricket league across the world.

In this article, we will take a look at the reason why MSD will be unable to participate in the Legends League Cricket.

Why Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be unable to take part in the Legends-League Cricket

According to the rules of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a player has to completely retire from Indian-Cricket to participate in the Foreign Cricket Leagues across the world.

Once a player decides to leave Indian-Cricket and participates in any other Foreign Cricket league, then that player won’t be able to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) anymore.

In the case of MS Dhoni, he has retired from International-Cricket but he still plies his trade for five-time winners Chennai Super Kings. This is the main reason why the veteran cannot participate in the Legends League Cricket.

Once MSD takes part in the LLC, he won’t get the opportunity to make his comeback to India’s cash-rich T20 league.

India’s legendary Cricketers such as Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Saurav Ganguly and many more have returned to play in Cricket leagues across the globe after retiring completely from Indian-Cricket.

MSD can do something similar and can opt to participate in any of the Cricket leagues if wishes to.

Top Batsmen to Watch in Champions Trophy 2025

0

The Champions Trophy will be played in Pakistan from the 19th of February to the 9th of March. The PCB has announced the three stadiums of Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi as the venues of the tournament.

Pakistan being a sub-continent nation, does have tracks similarly favouring batting, as the ball often comes nicely onto the bat. The World Cup 2023 which was held in India saw the batters perform extremely well, as Virat Kohli, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Shreyas Iyer, Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma all excelled with the bat and scored many runs.

Pakistan grounds have also been fair enough for the ones who can handle the pace and spin efficiently as the boundaries are short and hence a lot of runs are likely to be scored on these tracks.

Let’s take a look at the Top contenders in the batting department at the Champions Trophy:

1. Virat Kohli

Virat Kolhi 1

Legendary Indian batter, Virat Kohli has an exemplary record when it comes to scoring runs for India in the ODI format as well as in ICC tournaments. Home-like tracks of Pakistan will not affect his good form, one he showed in the last World Cup, and hence he might score as many runs.

2. Babar Azam

Babar Azam Steps Down As Captain From All Formats of Pakistan Cricket Team
Babar Azam

Pakistan veteran and ICC-ranked world No. 1 ODI batter, Babar Azam has been Pakistan’s most consistent in the format and will be expected to score many runs for his team when playing at home grounds.

3. Rohit Sharma

Babar Azam's Throne in Danger as Rohit Sharma moves to No. 2 in ODI Rankings
Rohit Sharma

The Indian skipper is in the form of his life, as he is now also the World no.2 ranked ODi batter, Rohit Sharma is one of the most explosive openers in World cricket. Hence, often making full use of the powerplay to give his team crucial starts he can emerge as one of the best run-getters.

4. Daryl Mitchell

Mitchell was New Zealand’s keyman though he joined them late in the World Cup 2023, as well-supported by the likes of great Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. He also scored a stunning century in the semi-finals against India though the Kiwis lost in the game.

5. Kane Williamson

New Zealand’s skipper and probably the greatest to have played for the island nation Williamson is already their highest run-scorer across formats and also in the ODI format as he surpassed Ross Taylor and Stephen Fleming. With his immense ability to handle spin bowling, he turns a key man to score runs for his team on such tracks which largely favour spin bowling.

6. Jos Buttler

England’s skipper is probably the finest for the nation right now, and new coach McCullum has already hailed him as the greatest to feature in the format. Buttler on return might be England’s marquee man.

7. Travis Head

Head is undoubtedly currently Australia’s best limited-overs batter, as Travis Head’s explosive batting style has shown how promising can he be in the Champions Trophy, as India is now a nest of big scores for the opening batter.

8. Mohammad Rizwan

If it’s Pakistan it has to be Rizwan, he has been in even better form recently than legend Babar Azam, as the batter has often rescued Pakistan from troubling situations. Hence, Rizwan will be in an even more crucial role for Pakistan.

9. Fakhar Zaman

Explosive Pakistan opener, Fakhar Zaman emerged as their decent performer in ODIs as he has scored many runs in the format for Pakistan, while he was also the Player of the Match in 2017, when Pakistan lifted the CT title for the first time. This time around under home conditions he will be very vital for the tournament with the bat.

Watch: India’s Rishabh Pant Hilariously Helps Bangladesh Set The Field on Day 3 of 1st Test

Watch: India’s Rishabh Pant Hilariously Helps Bangladesh Set The Field on Day 3 of 1st Test: The first test-match of the two-match Test-Series between India and Bangladesh is currently going on at the Chepauk Stadium of Chennai. The Men in Blue currently have the advantage as they have taken a lead of 432 runs in the match.

The duo of Shubman Gill (86*runs in 137 deliveries) wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant (82 runs in 108 deliveries) are looking in a really good nick out there in the middle for the Rohit Sharma-led team in third-day of the first-test in the city of Chennai on Thursday.

Even though both of them started things off on a cautious note, they are showcasing an attacking intent as they are going after the Bangladeshi bowlers following the conclusion of the drinks break.

Both of the youngsters were given lifelines as the Bangladeshi fielders dropped two-catches. The fielding setup of the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led team was scrutinised by Tamim Iqbal and Ravi Shastri for showcasing a poor fielding effort in the field and also for showcasing a lack-of-intent.

In what proved to be yet another impertinent example of how things are going on for the visitors, Pant was hilariously witnessed setting the field of Bangladesh on the third day of the first-test.

“Abey yeha aayega ek fielder. Yeha fielder kam hai (Hey, make a fielder stand here. The number of fielders at this spot are less),” Rishabh told Najmul Hossain Shanto, pointing towards the leg-side region.

The Tigers skipper in the end actually made a fielder stand in the mid-wicket region after the suggestion given by the Indian Wicketkeeper batsman

Interestingly, Men in Blue’s former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni had done something similar during the 2019 One Day Cricket World Cup. MSD had told Bangladesh’s Sabbir Rahman to change the position of a fielder and Rahman had gladly obliged.

Rohit Sharma and his men have reached a score of 205 runs at the loss of three wickets at the lunch mark in their second inning and they have taken a healthy 432 run-lead versus Bangladesh on the third-day of the first-test match on Saturday.

Gill and Pant are still batting at the middle and have crossed the 50 runs mark. They are involved in a partnership of 138* runs.

On the second day of the opening-test game, the visitors got all-out for a mere score of 149 runs in their first inning, giving the Indian Cricket Team a huge 227 run lead in the first-inning. Rohit Sharma and his men had scored 376 runs in their first inning.

The Mighty Aussies are ahead in the series by a margin of 1-0, having defeated the Three Lions in the first ODI and they will be looking to extend their lead in the series by securing consecutive wins against the home side.

The tourists were absolutely phenomenal in the first One Day International match as the duo of Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head toyed with the English bowling unit and helped their team to win by six wickets.

The Men in Yellow will be looking to carry forward their winning momentum of the first game into the second match by securing another victory.

England on the other hand, were good in the batting department, but their bowling department struggled to get the better of Travis Head. The Southpaw was at his explosive best as he smashed all of the English bowlers to all parts of the ground in the first ODI.

The Harry Brook-led team will be looking to level the series before finding themselves in a difficult situation of trailing the Kangaroos by 0-2.

The ongoing England vs Australia One Day International series is acting as a preparatory ground for both the teams for next year’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

Pat Cummins and his boys are the defending ODI World-Cup champions and they will be looking to increase their trophy tally by lifting the Champions Trophy with the help of such a talented group of players present in their squad.

England meanwhile will be looking to make a comeback after their embarrassing performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Hardik Pandya is set to return to Test Cricket, will play in the Ranji Trophy after 6 years

0

Team India’s fast-bowling-all-rounder Hardik Pandya is anticipated to make himself available for selection for Baroda’s Domestic-Cricket Season of 2024-2025.

According to a top source of the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA), the chances of Junior Pandya making a return to red-ball Cricket are high, keeping in mind the home Test-Series versus New Zealand and the upcoming tour of Australia later in December this year.

Recently, Hardik posted some pictures on his social media account where he was seen practising with the red-ball. The 30-year-old is also likely to play limited-overs Domestic Cricket for Baroda.

Junior Pandya hasn’t participated in First-class-Cricket for Baroda since their Ranji Trophy encounter versus Mumbai way back in 2018.

The 30-year-old last played a Test-match for the Men in Blue way back in 2018 versus England at the Rose Bowl Cricket Stadium of Southampton.

Having participated in 11 Test matches where he has a best score of 108 runs versus Sri Lanka and a five-wicket haul versus England at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, Pandya has done well in the limited- chances he has been given.

In 2023, right before the Indian Cricket Team’s WTC final against Australia, Hardik said that it wouldn’t be fair for him to be a part of the Men in Blue’s playing 11 after not playing Test Cricket since 2018.

The 30-year-old talked about the hard work he needed to do to make a comeback in the longest format of the game.

“I haven’t done anything deserving to take part in the WTC-Final versus Australia. I am not even a part of one percent. So, me coming directly into the playing 11 and replacing a well deserved player won’t be fair and it doesn’t sound good either,” Hardik said.

“If I want to play Test-matches for the nation, I will grind, work hard and earn my rightful place. Thus, due to this particular reason, I will not be taking part in the final (WTC) or future bilateral test-series till I don’t feel that I deserve to play in a fair manner,” he added.

The junior Pandya doesn’t have a lot of time available with him to prepare as Baroda’s first Ranji Trophy 2024-2025 match is versus last season’s winners Mumbai on the 11th of October.

The India vs New Zealand test series kicks off from the 16th of October onwards while the Border-Gavaskar series will begin from 22nd November.

Rizwan, Babar and Shaheen to attend ‘Connection Camp’ of PCB ahead of Champions Cup Playoffs

0

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the nation’s Cricket Governing-Body has decided to hold a one-day Connection-Camp for the nation’s top-players in the city of Lahore on the 23rd of September.

Following the culmination of the final-pool encounter of the nation’s Champions One-Day Cup on 22nd September, the tournament’s playoffs will begin from 24th September onwards, giving the players a chance to relax and rest for a day before the important matches.

Important players, including the likes of Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood and Saim Ayub have been asked to participate in the Connection Camp.

The team’s limited-overs Head Coach, Gary Kirsten alongwith Red-Ball coach Jason Gillespie will be attending the camp. The latter will land in the city of Lahore on the 22nd of September.

The main motive of the camp is to discuss Pakistan Cricket’s future and prepare the players for next year’s mega-event, the Champions Trophy which will be held in Pakistan.

On Wednesday of this week, limited-overs head coach Kirsten had participated in an important meeting with the mentors and head-coaches of the Champions One-Day Cup teams.

The 56-year-old has demanded that the same level of Cricket should be adopted in Domestic-Cricket which is needed to succeed at the highest level of the sport.

Carrying on with the discussion, Gary encouraged the support staff members to utilise their experience in order to improve the performances of the players.

“Individual performances can help Pakistan win games, but victories in tournaments and series are secured through dedication and hardwork,” Pakistan’s limited-overs head coach said.

He added that the Shaheens are blessed to have talented players in their squad, who just need to make some small adjustments, fine-tuning and skills.

According to some sources, Gary Kirsten is preparing a list of potential-players who will be given a chance to prove themselves at the International level in the near future.

The Pakistani Men’s National Cricket Team will have a busy schedule between November of this year to April 2025, where they will be taking part in 18 ODI (One Day Internationals) games and nine T20I (T20 International) encounters.

Pakistan vs England test series schedule to be announced in the next 2 days

0

The Cricket Governing Body of Pakistan, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is anticipated to unveil the complete-schedule for the forthcoming 3-match Test-Series versus England within the next two or three days.

As the much awaited Pakistan vs England test series gets closer, the visitors are facing some issues as their skipper Ben Stokes is still battling his injury issues.

Ben Stokes suffered a hamstring-injury in the month of August but England have still gone ahead with the decision of including him in the squad for the tour of Pakistan despite the 33-year old not getting the complete fitness clearance.

The Three Lions skipper is set to undergo fitness scans next-week to evaluate his match readiness for the first test-match, which is set to start from the 7th of October onwards.

The PCB have decided to host the matches of the test series against England in the Multan International Cricket Stadium of Multan and Rawalpindi’s Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, with the board planning to organise the first two test matches in the Multan International Cricket Stadium.

The decision of not allowing Karachi to host a test match is due to the construction-work going on in the stadium at present.

While the confirmed schedule of the three-match Test Series is not revealed yet, the intention of the Pakistan Cricket Board is to let the Green Shirts make full use of the favourable conditions in the Multan International Cricket Stadium by organising two test matches at that venue.

However, an alternate option of letting the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium play host to the first & third test-matches of the series is also an option which the PCB can consider.

England’s squad for the Test-series versus Pakistan

Gus Atkinson, Rehan Ahmed, Ben Stokes (Captain), Harry Brook, Shoaib Bashir, Jordan Cox, Brydon Carse, Josh Hull, Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Jack Leach, Joe Root, Matthew Potts, Olly Stone, Jamie Smith (WK) and Chris Woakes.

Travis Head and Labuschagne help Australia defeat England in the first ODI

Aussie hard hitting opener Travis Head showcased yet another phenomenal display with the bat as Australia defeated England by a margin of seven wickets in the first One Day International of the five-match series and they have taken a 1-0 lead.

At Nottingham’s Trent Bridge Stadium, Head played an unbelievable unbeaten inning of 154 runs in 129 deliveries which consisted of five maximums and 20 fours as the Kangaroos chased-down a difficult target of 316 runs in just 44 overs.

This win versus the Three Lions was Australia’s 13th consecutive One Day International victory and they also recorded their joint fourth-highest run-chase in the 50 over format.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Harry Brook-led team got all-out for 315 runs in 49.4 overs.Opener Phil Salt got dismissed early on, but the duo of Will Jacks and Ben Duckett stabilised things by getting involved in a partnership of 120 runs for the second-wicket.

Duckett desperately wanted to bring up his century but he was eventually dismissed by Marnus Labuschagne on 95 runs. Labuschagne was Australia’s best bowler of the match as he accounted for three wickets.

Will Jacks played a good helping hand with a knock of 62 runs before leg spinner Adam Zampa got the better of him. Zampa, who was playing his 100th One Day International match, had a really good day as he ended the match with figures of 3-49 next to his name.

Captain Harry Brook and youngster Jamie Smith played decent knocks of 39 and 23 runs respectively. 20-year-old Jacob Bethell, who performed really well in the T20 International series, scored 35 runs which included one maximum and three fours.

A target of 316 runs was never an easy task by any means but Australia managed to pull it off. Seamer Matthew Pots gave the hosts a good start as he got rid of Australia’s captain Mitchell Marsh in the fourth over.

However, Travis Head ensured that the ODI World Cup winner didn’t face any kind of difficulties in the chase. He along with Steve Smith (32 runs in 28 balls) stitched a partnership of 76 runs for the second-wicket and the duo got Australia in a safe spot.

But, Smith got dismissed in the 16th over off the bowling of Liam Livingstone as the Aussies were sitting at 96-2 in 15.3 overs.

Cameron Green (32 runs in 32 balls) walked out to bat at number four and he provided an ample amount of support to Head as the two got involved in a 73 run partnership.

Green though was sent back to pavilion by Jacob Bethell in the 27th over but the Kangaroos didn’t feel worried as they were comfortably sitting at 169-3.

Marnus Labuschagne (77 runs in 61 deliveries) walked to the crease following the dismissal of Green but him and Head ensured Australia didn’t lose any more wickets as they helped the World Champions cruise their way to victory.

Travis scored his century in 92 deliveries and he didn’t look like stopping as he brought up his second 150+ score in 123 balls.

After getting defeated in an embarrassing way, the Three Lions will be looking to make a comeback in the series by winning the second One Day International on the 21st of September at the Headingley Cricket Stadium of Leeds.
