ICC World Cup 2023: 3 biggest upsets in World Cup history feat Afghanistan

ICC World Cups over the years have seen some breathtaking performances. There have been many nail-bitters, one-sided games as well as many upsets. Talking about small nations beating big guns, it has been liked by one and all as it is not very often that we get to see this.

The ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 was host to one upset so far as Afghanistan thumped England in the league stage at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. They outplayed the defending champions with both bat and ball and won the match. With the bat, they managed 284 runs and then bundled out the opposition for 215 runs to bag the victory by 69 runs.

ICC World Cup 2023: 3 biggest upsets in World Cup history

As big guns like England faced a disappointing defeat against Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023, we take a look at the 3 biggest upsets in World Cup history.

3. Ireland vs Pakistan (Jamaica, 2007)

One of the biggest upsets in the history of the ICC World Cup came in 2007. The game between Ireland and Pakistan took place in Jamaica and world cricket witnessed something surprising. The Irish side won the toss and elected to field first. They displayed magic with the ball and bundled out Men in Green for just 132 runs.

Boyd Rankin was the star with the ball as he picked three wickets whereas every other bowler chipped in as well. With the bat then Ireland lost quick wickets and it seemed that they would lose. However, Niall O’Brien smashed a brilliant 72 and took his team home to register the famous win.

2. Kenya vs Sri Lanka (Nairobi, 2003)

Kenya was among one of the teams that pulled one of the most famous upsets in the history of the ICC World Cup. They thumped Sri Lanka at Nairobi in 2003. Kenya was asked to bat first and on account half-century by Kennedy Otieno and vital contributions from Hitesh Modi and Maurice Odumbe posted a total of 215 runs on the board.

Kenya was sensational with the ball after that as they put Sri Lanka under tremendous pressure in the game. Although, Arvinda da Silva held the fort but bowlers chipped in at regular stages. Collins Obuya picked a five-wicket haul as they bundled out Sri Lanka for 157 runs to win the game by 53 runs.

1. India vs West Indies (Lord’s, 1983)

One of the biggest upsets in the history of ODI World Cups was when India defeated the mighty West Indies in the final of the 1983 World Cup. At that time, there was no bigger team than West Indies and India being a low-ranked beating them in the final is still one of the famous victories of all time.

India wasn’t up to the mark with the bat as they were bundled out for just 183 with Kris Srikanth being the top scorer with his 38-run knock. No one expected that they would win but Indian bowlers produced a miracle. They bundled out West Indies for 140 runs to win the game by 43 runs. Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal picked three wickets each whereas Balwinder Sandhu bagged two wickets that helped the team achive history.

ICC World Cup 2023: PCB likely to lodge official complaint to ICC for Ahmedabad crowd’s antics during IND vs PAK clash – Reports

The India vs Pakistan clash in the ICC World Cup 2023 took place on 14th October at Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad. It was a sea of blue there as the stadium was jam-packed with Indian spectators. The fans were behind the Men in Blue and they put great pressure on the Babar Azam-led side.

While there was utter chaos on every run and wicket taken by India, the stadium also witnessed pin-drop silence during the game when Pakistan scored runs and took wickets. This was because hardly any supporter from Pakistan was present in the stands as they weren’t granted visas by the Indian embassy.

The ICC World Cup 2023 game also witnessed a section of the crowd that was pathetic and mocked Pakistan players. When captain Babar Azam came for the toss, he was booed by fans in Ahmedabad and also a video emerged on social media in which Mohammad Rizwan was subjected to religious chants.

The Pakistan players were also trolled brutally for their performance against India in ICC World Cup 2023. A section of spectators also threw paper planes towards Hasan Ali. Apart from this there were some toxic remarks as well that haven’t gone well with the Pakistan Cricket Board.

As per the reports in the Telegraph, the Pakistan Cricket Board is likely to lodge an official complaint against the Ahmedabad crowd to the International Cricket Council (ICC). The top officials of the governing body are looking into the matter and will address the issue to Chairman Zaka Ashraf, who will take the final call.

Pakistan notably received great support from Hyderabad crowd, where they played their two games and won both of them. They also got a warm welcome on arriving in India. The Babar Azam-led side have now moved to Bangalore, where they will be playing against Australia and the will travel to Chennai for Afghanistan clash.

The match between India and Pakistan was dominated by Men in Blue in all three departments of the game. Asked to bat first, the Babar Azam-led side was bundled out for just 191 runs. Captain Babar Azam smashed a vital fifty but couldn’t carry on. Mohammad Rizwan made 49 and perished at a crucial juncture. After their wickets , the team faced a massive collapse as Indian bowlers were all over them.

In the chase, India captain Rohit Sharma went bonkers and took Pakistan’s bowlers to the cleaners in match 12 of the ICC World Cup. He smashed 85 runs to take his team close to target. Shreyas Iyer also hit an unbeaten half-century that helped India win the game by 8 wickets.

AUS vs SL Dream11 Prediction, Australia vs Sri Lanka Dream11 Team, Playing 11, Ekana Cricket Stadium Pitch Report | ICC World Cup 2023

AUS vs SL Dream11 Prediction: More than a dozen matches have been played in the ICC World Cup 2023 and Australia are at the last of the ICC World Cup Points table. This is bizarre and very uncommon for a team like Australia to stand last in a World Cup tally. Well, today they have a chance to change it all as Pat Cummins and Co. are all set to take on Kusal Mendis-led Sri Lanka in the 14th match of World Cup 2023 at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. This post covers the AUS vs SL Dream11 Prediction, Australia vs Sri Lanka Dream11 Team, Playing 11, Ekana Cricket Stadium Pitch Report.

Many cricket pundits considered Australia as one of the top contenders to play the final this year but Pat Cummins’ team has shown no signs till now. They are one of those three bottommost teams that have not won any match in this tournament and their NRR is the lowest among all the teams playing in the World Cup 2023 i.e., -1.846.

Australia lost consecutive 5 ODIs before the World Cup (three against South Africa and two against India). They were in the top 4 (of World Cup 2023 teams) in all the expert’s predictions but reality seems just the opposite to it. However, the Aussies know how to bounce back harder and they have the ability to turn the position upside down.

Sri Lanka have dealt a huge blow as their regular skipper Dasun Shanaka is ruled out of the tournament following his thigh injury. Chamika Karunaratne is announced as his replacement but it will be interesting to see if he can fit in Shanaka’s shoes.

Since Matheesha Pathirana is also out due to an injury, Kasun Rajitha should start with the new ball. Kusal Mendis, the captain, made it obvious that he would not be interested in changing the batting order simply because he is now in command.

Pitch Report of Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium

The Ekana Cricket Stadium has a reputation for providing ideal bowling conditions, particularly for spinners. The sluggish pitches here make it challenging for batters to get going and drive the ball through the line. Additionally, as the game goes on, pacers could benefit from the slow pitch since they can use multiple variations in addition to their stock ball.

World Cup 2023 Points Table Updated (October 16) after England vs Afghanistan: India on TOP Spot | ICC World Cup 2023 Most Runs, Most Wickets All Stats

World Cup 2023 Points Table Updated: In a major upset of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, Afghanistan have convincingly defeated defending champion, England, by a massive 69 runs to bring up their first win of the World Cup 2023. The win got them flying in the World Cup 2023 Points Table with two rating points. This article will lead you through World Cup 2023 Points Table Updated (October 16) after England vs Afghanistan: India on TOP Spot | ICC World Cup 2023 Most Runs, Most Wickets All Stats.

Not many would have boasted Afghanistan to beat England, rather, we should say, demolish the World Champions, but that’s the reality of cricket. The game is highly unpredictable and a player having a good day in the field can turn the table upside down easily.

England were simply poor with both batting and bowling in the game against Afghanistan, at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Both their departments looked rusty. That being said, nothing to take away from Afghanistan, they brilliantly turned up in Delhi to beat the reigning champions, who are touted as one of the contenders for the ICC World Cup 2023.

After being put first to bat in Delhi, Afghanistan scored 284 runs before getting wrapped up, just one delivery shy of 50 overs. Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was their top scorer with 80 runs under his belt. Gurbaz not only provided Afghanistan with a brisk start, but also helped the side with consistent ticking of the scoreboard.

Besides, Gurbaz, the wicketkeeper batter Ikram Alikhil played a healthy 58-run knock while his team saw a debacle in the middle order. Later in the innings, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman played handy knocks to take Afghanistan’s total to 284 against England.

Though, initially, England were expected to hunt this target quite easily, their innings was made to struggle by the Afghan bowlers. Besides Harry Brook and to some extent Dawid Malan, no other batter looked comfortable against Afghanistan.

Brook kept England’s hopes of winning the contest alive until he was in the middle, but his dismissal in the 35th over shattered the hopes of Englishmen. Brook was dismissed by Mujeeb ur Rahman at a score of 66 runs.

Afghanistan bowled out England in just 40.3 overs at a score of 215 runs and won the contest by 69 runs.

Mujeeb ur Rahman and Rashid Khan were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets each while Mohammad Nabi got two for him and Naveen ul Haq and Fazhalhaq Farooki got one apiece.

With the win, Afghanistan took a giant leap in the World Cup 2023 Points Table. The team is now placed in the sixth place. Below is World Cup 2023 Points Table Updated (October 16) after England vs Afghanistan: India on TOP Spot | ICC World Cup 2023 Most Runs, Most Wickets All Stats.

World Cup 2023 Points Table Updated (October 16)

Afghanistan was placed at the bottom of the points table ahead of the fixture against England with no wins in two games. But a win against England has put them in an optimistic position. Afghanistan are currently holding the sixth spot with 2 points in the World Cup 2023 Points Table.

England, on the other hand, are placed one place above Afghanistan. England have managed to win one game earlier in the tournament owing to which they are slotted ahead of Afghanistan.

Dasun Shanaka Ruled Out of World Cup 2023

World Cup 2023: Huge blow for Sri Lanka as Dasun Shanaka, the skipper of the Sri Lankan team, has been ruled out of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 Tournament. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board have announced Chamika Karunaratne as his replacement for the campaign from now.

For Sri Lanka, Dasun Shanaka’s role as a captain and bowler was more significant than his role as a batsman. He has been forced to leave the current World Cup tournament due to a thigh injury. Dasun Shanaka suffered a right thigh muscle strain during Sri Lanka’s most recent six-wicket loss against Pakistan, and doctors have estimated that his recovery time will be three weeks.

The injury to Dasun Shanaka comes as a blow for Sri Lanka who are one amongst the four teams to have not won a game yet in the World Cup. ICC has confirmed the news and also accepted the replacement request. ICC has also released a statement regarding this update.

The ICC wrote in a statement, “The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has approved Chamika Karunaratne, who has played 23 ODIs, as a replacement after Shanaka was ruled out due to a right thigh muscle injury sustained during Sri Lanka’s match against Pakistan on 10th October. The injury needs three weeks to recover.

Dasun Shanaka Ruled Out of World Cup 2023
Chamika Karunaratne to replace Shanaka

Karunaratne has participated in 23 ODIs for the nation of Lanka as a middle-order batsman and right-arm medium bowler. The 27-year-old has taken 24 wickets and amassed 443 runs, including a fifty in his brief ODI career.

Sri Lanka has lost its first two matches in the competition to South Africa and Pakistan. In New Delhi, while they were chasing a commanding 429, the 32-year-old Shanaka scored a 62-ball 68 against South Africa.

In their forthcoming World Cup encounter on Monday in Lucknow, Sri Lanka, who is presently positioned seventh in the tournament standings, will take on Australia. The absence of Dasun Shanaka offers a big obstacle for the Sri Lankan team, and Karunaratne’s inclusion is intended to strengthen their roster as they strive to enhance their performance in the competition.

Kusal Mendis, who was named as vice-captain of the Sri Lankan team, will now take over the captaincy duties and lead the team from the front. Kusal Mendis has been in some exceptional form in this World Cup and let’s see what he has to offer as a captain.

ICC Men’s ODI Ranking Updated After India vs Pakistan

India beating Pakistan in an ODI World Cup is a never-ending thriller ride where the former have defeated the latter in every battle they have met in. India faced Pakistan a total of 8 times in the ODI World Cup History and have been on the sweet corner on every outing; all of them have been one-sided.

This year, it was believed that India vs Pakistan would be a neck-to-neck encounter between the two Asian giants but it seemed like Pakistan entered the field with a ‘we can never beat Men in Blue’ mindset which was very visible from ball one.

Bowling first, India picked up early wickets. Babar and Rizwan showed some resistance, they were not too promising though. India forced a collapse breakdown to Pakistan’s batting line-up. Pakistan were 155-2 at one stage and just 10 overs later, they were all out for 191 runs.

Shubman Gill was back to the side and gave a brisk start to the team and then there was a HITMAN SHOW at the Narendra Modi Stadium where Rohit Sharma hammered Pakistani bowlers scoring 86(63). Shreyas Iyer scored the half-century and India registered a record 7-wicket win.

India won 3 matches straight in a row leading them to the top of the ICC World Cup Points table. These three wins have rewarded India 3 rating points and Now India have 118 Rating and lead the ICC Men’s ODI Ranking. Pakistan won 2 and lost 1 to the date in this tournament and are in the second spot with 115 rating points.

Most Sixes in International Cricket, Most Sixes in ODI Cricket: Indian captain, Rohit Sharma on yet another occasion rose to the expectation and continued his sublime form in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023. Sharma took on arch-rival Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and dismantled their bowling single-handedly, making it a comfortable win for India.

Rohit Sharma scored a magnificent 86 runs in the process of tormenting the Pakistani bowlers during the India vs Pakistan clash. His 56-run knock was aided by six boundaries and as many sixes.

Sharma was on a six-hitting spree against Pakistan on October 14 and achieved the milestone of being the only third batter in cricket to register 300 maximums on the list of most sixes in ODI cricket.

The Indian skipper belted Pakistani pacer Haris Rauf over mid-on to reach the landmark of 300 sixes in the ODIs during the ICC World Cup 2023.

In the list of most sixes in ODI cricket, Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi has claimed the top spot with a record 351 maximums in 398 games, followed by West Indies’ Chris Gayle (331 sixes in 301 matches). Rohit Sharma is placed third on the list with a total of 303 maximums in 254 games.

Interestingly, Rohit Sharma, during India’s ICC World Cup 2023 fixture against Afghanistan, went past Chris Gayle’s record of most sixes in International Cricket (across formats). While Chris Gayle’s record stood at 553 sixes, Rohit Sharma bravely stands at 562 maximums across the three cricket formats (ODI + T20I + Tests).

Below is the list of the most sixes in International Cricket and Most Sixes in ODI Cricket History. Rohit Sharma makes big in both lists.
