IPL 2025: 3 Players who might be retained by KKR if Sangakara turns in as their mentor replacing Gambhir

IPL 2025: The Indian Premier League 2024 saw the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) perform to the best of their standards, with some crucial changes to the squad under legendary franchise veteran player turned mentor, Gautam Gambhir.

Gambhir was seen in the IPL as a mentor with the Lucknow Super Giants since their debut in the tournament in 2022, while next he was roped into the KKR side ahead of the 2024 IPL mini-auction. Gambhir took some unconventional calls, like making a huge bid of 24.75 crores INR on World Cup-winning bowler, Mitchell Starc.

After their IPL triumph, Gambhir was approached as a national replacement for Team India’s head coach, replacing the likes of T20 World Cup-winning coach Rahul Dravid. KKR has been in the quest for a new mentor since Gambhir turned team India head coach.

Likely, some reports from the Indian newspaper Telegraph suggest that Royals Director of Cricket, Kumara Sangakara is in talks of being appointed as KKR mentor. Recently, Rahul Dravid was reported to be coming in as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals.

3. Rinku Singh

The Kolkata Knight Riders star Rinku Singh has been a part of the franchise for a long time, as Rinku will also be seen in a role this time around as well. The batter has been a recognised talent even for the Men in Blues and can currently be seen captaining the Meerut Mavericks in the UP T20 League.

Alongside his aggressive batting and six-hitting capacity in the role of a finisher, Rinku has also evolved to be a bowler with wicket-taking abilities. A seemingly too low a price of 55lakhs, for a player of his calibre is what would add to him being retained.

2. Sunil Narine

Kolkata’s MVP, most-valuable player Sunil Narine will be again retained for sure as he has always been since his debut in 2012 for the franchise. The player’s all-around capacity to bat up the order and make full use of the powerplay, alongside being the most economical spinners in World t20, makes him the best for the role of an all-rounder.

1. Phil Salt

Though KKR will be in dilemma over Andre Russel their marquee player, skipper Shreyas Iyer as well as bowling sensation Harshit Rana, still English opener Phil Salt might be given the upper hand if Sangakara’s preferences are to be trusted.

Phil Salt has performed highly in the IPL 2024, as he scored many runs up the order for Knight Riders alongside Narine. Salt has recently been appointed as the T20I skipper for an injured English skipper Jos Buttler.

“Dravid was balanced, Gautam is very one-sided about…” Rishabh Pant differentiates Rahul and Gautam as head coach

Gautam Gambhir, the new Head Coach of India, took over the duties after the completion of T20 World Cup-winning coach Rahul Dravid’s Tenure. Rishabh Pant has now spoken on the shuttle changes in the team’s dressing room and environment around the team’s mindset.

After Rahul Dravid, the selection of Gautam Gambhir for the post of Head Coach was a clear-cut indication of the aggressive approach by BCCI. We all have seen how eager Gautam is for a positive result.

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach of the Indian cricket team was marked by significant achievements, including guiding the team to multiple ICC finals and ultimately ending their ICC trophy drought by securing a World Cup victory. Under his leadership, India reached the finals of the ICC World Test Championship 2023 and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, both against Australia.

Despite suffering close defeats in these high-stakes encounters, Dravid’s resilience and dedication remained unwavering. The Indian team under his supervision lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy.

Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the head coach of the Indian Cricket team after the World Cup 2024 and the team has played a T20I series and an ODI series under him against Sri Lanka. India won the T20I series 3-0 and lost the ODI series 2-1.

Rishabh Pant, having worked closely with both coaches, shared his insights on their contrasting styles during an interview on JioCinema ahead of the Duleep Trophy 2024, where he represents India B.

Rishabh Pant candidly noted that Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir possess distinct coaching approaches, with Dravid being more balanced and composed, while Gambhir is known for his aggressive demeanor.

The anchor asked, “What is the biggest change that can happen under Gautam Gambhir and how it can take Indian cricket forward?

Rishabh Pant responded, “I feel Rahul bhai was very balanced as a human being and as a coach. It could be both good and bad because in cricket there can be positives. This is upon the individuals whether to focus on the positives and negatives, and it depends on where individuals want to focus.”

“Gauti bhai (Gambhir) is more aggressive, he’s very one-sided about the fact that you have to win. But you need to find the right balance and improve. This is the best part of international cricket,” he concluded.

T20 World Cup winner, Ravindra Jadeja joins the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)

Indian legendary all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja, who is India’s T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy winner joined the Bhartiya Janata Party, BJP.

The ace cricketer’s wife, Rivaba Jadeja has been a long-held MLA with the BJP party since 2022. She first joined the party in 2019, after which she was fielded in 2022 as she went on to win her first legislative elections against the AAP-led opponent from Jamnagar.

The BJP president, JP Nadda announced the membership drive of the national party on 2nd September, which was started with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s renewal of membership for the party.

The star cricketer’s wife Rivaba shared the news as well as photos of her husband Jadeja and herself on her social media handles. She also posted for their membership cards.

Before this, Ravindra Jadeja had announced his retirement from T20 international cricket post India’s successful run in the ICC event of the shortest format. The 35-year-old had announced the retirement post the retirement announcement of skipper Sharma and veteran Kohli in the post-match credit interviews of the match.

Jadeja was also picked in the Duleep Trophy squad after the BCCI issued a strict notice on the participation of all players in the domestic tournament before they select a team for India’s hectic upcoming schedule starting from the Bangladesh home series to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to be played later this year.

However, Jadeja was later withdrawn from participation in the domestic season and the reason seemed unlikely to be known. However, despite his non-participation, it can be anticipated that the World’s no.1 ranked Test all-rounder picked by the ICC, should be a part of India’s test schedule in whichever part of the world they play in.

Jadeja will be seen with the Chennai Super Kings, though nothing has been officially announced about his retention. He will also be considered as one of India’s ace champs for the upcoming Champions Trophy as much of cricket is yet to be followed. However, his recent decision ensures him to be seen in a role other than on the field.

The BCCI have given the domestic as well as the international players a stern decision to participate in the Duleep Trophy to recognize their talent before the selectors go on to finalize a team before the Bangladesh and New Zealand home series.

Team India has been the constant finalist for both the World Test Championships, of which the first was held in 2021 and the following edition in 2023; however, both have seen India letting go of the trophy to their opponents. This time, with the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of India, the team will be looking for a quest for a new set of test players.

Players with the likes of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Axar Patel, Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Sarfaraz Khan, and many such players will be seen in the Duleep Trophy, with only Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah spared over contention in the domestic circle.

While the Duleep Trophy saw, players like Suryakumar Yadav, the T20I skipper, Mohammad Siraj, Umran Malik, and Ishan Kishan have been reported to be ruled out of the first half of the Duleep Trophy, as Samson was chosen to replace Ishan Kishan from the side.

India A vs. India B: The Scenarios from Chennai ft. Musheer Khan

The India B team were pushed onto bat first after India. A skipper, Shubman Gill, won the toss at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium. The track didn’t seem very ideal to bat on, as the openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Easwaran, came in to bat.

The start was not as unconvincing as Jaiswal, and the No. 3 batter, Musheer Khan, who is making his Duleep Trophy debut, batted well. The issue arose when Jaiswal got out after his 30.

The middle order, comprising Srafaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, collapsed miserably, as Sundar and Sai Kishore got out without troubling the scorers. Team A pacers Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, and Akashdeep all took 2 wickets each, as Team B were 7 wickets down for 94 runs.

Seeming to be in trouble, the 19-year-old Musheer Khan played the most remarkable innings of his career on his very debut match. Alongside Navdeep Saini, he batted vigilantly for his Duleep Trophy hundred with his 105* run-knock, which he scored with a single against Kuldeep and then leapt into the air.

At the end of Day 1, at Chinnaswamy, Team B is 202/7 with Musheer not out on 105 while Saini supported well with his 29*.

India C vs. India D: Axar Patel emerges hero at Anantapur

After a very disappointing batter’s day on the Anantapur track, if only one man left the field with his head held high and the bat in his hand, then it would be none other than Axar Patel.

The top-order collapsed to the pacers again, as they could not even raise a 50 run as Kamboj, Vyshak, and Himanshu Chauhan struck 7 wickets between them to resist them to a small total.

In their short innings of 164, Axar Patel scored 50% of the team runs with an 86-run knock with 6 fours and 6 sixes in his innings. On the bowling front, Harshit Rana struck twice for Team D as he got rid of the two openers, Gaikwad and Sudarshan, and then followed by Axar Patel’s 2-wickets of Patidar and Juyal.

At the end of Day 1, at Anantapur, Abhishek Porel, Bengal’s wk-batter scored a 32* with Indrajith’s 15*, as they ended the day with 91/4 at stumps.

Pakistan vs England test-series may get shifted to the UAE due to construction work going on Pakistan’s Stadiums

The upcoming three-match Test series between England and Pakistan is facing uncertainty regarding the venues where the matches will be played due to the ongoing construction work going on in the National Cricket Stadium of Karachi, which thereby raises the chances of the series getting shifted to Sri Lanka or the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The stadiums of Lahore, Rawalpindi and Karachi are undergoing renovation work for next year’s Champions Trophy which is going to take place in Pakistan and this development is creating difficulties for the PCB in organising bilateral-series matches in the country.

The first-test match of the series is scheduled to be played between 7-11 October in the city of Multan, the second test-match from the 15th of October till 19th in the city of Karachi, while the third and final encounter of the series will be played between 24th and 28th of October in Rawalpindi’s Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Nevertheless, the delays in the construction work is causing inconveniences in hosting the test-matches and if the construction-work is halted, then the preparations of next year’s Champions Trophy will get impacted. Plus, organising matches without letting fans enter the stadium is not going to be a feasible option for the PCB either.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the cricket governing body of the country, is considering the alternative venue options in Sri Lanka or the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

However, the Zayed Cricket Stadium of Abu Dhabi is the only realistic option for hosting games in the UAE as the matches of ICC’s upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 are going to be played in Sharjah (Sharjah Cricket Stadium) and Dubai (Dubai International Cricket Stadium).

With no official confirmation in regards to the venues, the PCB is anticipated to announce the final-stadium confirmations after holding a meeting with the ECB (England Cricket Board) in the next few days.

It’s worth noting that the Shaheens lost the two-match Test series against Bangladesh recently and the upcoming one against the Three Lions is going to be a must win one for the Shan Masood-led team if they want to stay alive in the race of playing in the WTC 2023-25 final.

England’s vision will be clear for the third and the last Test, and that would be to close the deal with a 3-0 scoreline. Just prior to the home season of the test series, England were last on the WTC points table but now, with five consecutive wins, they are in the 4th rank in the WTC standings.

Sri Lanka will look to salvage some pride by finishing the series on a positive note. Entering as underdogs, they have yet to defy that expectation. The historic setting of The Oval adds significance to the occasion, with its distinctive pitch conditions potentially playing a crucial role in determining the final outcome.

AUS vs SCO T20I: Head Destroys Scotland with a 25-ball 80

AUS vs SCO T20I: Is it even legal how Travis Head, the Aussie tourist, thrashed Scotland? Australia defeated Scotland in the first T20I of the tour with utter domination.

Hard to believe this is the same team that missed the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals! How often do you see a side chase down 155 in just 9.4 overs? That’s Australia for you.”

The match started with the visitors winning to toss and opting to bowl first. It was a decent start for both teams as Scotland were 56 for two wickets down. Skipper Berrington played cautiously but all it did was slow down the innings.

Berrington lost his wicket when the team’s score was 101 after 12 overs. In the remaining eight overs, the lower-middle order could only add 53 runs to it.

Australia had 155 to chase and the debutant and renowned aggressive opener Jake Fraser-McGurk took the strike first up along with Travis Head on the other side. Jake got the worst start to his international career as he got out for a bronze duck.

That was the only thing to celebrate for Scotland in the entire defense as Travis Head was totally in the other mood. After the first over, the world witnessed an unmatched, unbelievable and extraordinary display of ruthless hitting of the cricket ball.

Travis Head, complemented by Mitch Marsh, smashed the highest powerplay score of as many as 113 runs in 6 overs, of which, the first over only contributed 5 runs.

Travis Head reached his 50 in just 17 balls and also reached his 80 in just 24 balls while the 25th ball took him out of the ground. Jos Inglis also got some good connections and Australia chased the 155-run target within just 9.4 overs! That is just 58 balls!

Travis Head was awarded the Player Of The Match and the two teams will have a bout on 6th Sept at the same venue.

ENG vs SL: Root has a chance to break the long-standing record of Don Bradman’s all-time highest Test ranking points this season

0

ENG vs SL: England has already sealed the series, and what awaits them is the third match, which might see England experimenting as well as Joe Root fancying to take his records further.

The first two matches saw England dominate from different fronts, as both teams had some of their most eminent players performing. Though Sri Lanka could show some resistance in the first test, they highly underperformed in the second test.

Joe Root has been one of the record-breaking scorers for the English side as he leveled up his tally of most test hundreds for England alongside former skipper Alastair Cook with 33 in the first inning. While in the second inning, he again scored a tough hundred, his 34th, that took him to be England’s highest hundred-getter across all formats.

He is also only a few runs behind going past Kumara Sangakara and Alastair Cook, which will make him England’s highest run-getter; however, what awaits him is his outing against the Lankans in the final test at The Oval.

Root is now ranked the world’s no. 1 ranked ICC Test batter, with his current rating points being 922, while he has the chance of breaking Australia’s legend, Don Bradman’s long-standing record of highest ICC ranking points of 961 for the first time in nearly a century.

The English batter still has the final test of the summer at England against the Lankans and then a 3-match series against the Pakistanis at their home; both combined with his stunning form can lead him to a stature of breaking the record, which now seems invincible.

While also England made it formal that their soon-to-be 20-year-old lanky 6ft 7 inches bowler, Josh Hull, will be seen making his debut for them. He is also a part of England’s white-ball team for the Australia series, and hence his presence now needs to be felt. He likely replaces Matthew Potts from the team.

Babar Azam drops out of top 10 in ICC Test Batting Rankings after poor display against Bangladesh

0

The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently released the updated ICC Men’s Test Player rankings and some major changes have taken place in the rankings.

Following Pakistan’s defeat to Bangladesh in the two-match test series, Pakistani batter and seasoned campaigner Babar Azam, who had a horrible outing with the bat has dropped out of the top 10 ranks in the recently updated ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings.

The right-handed batter has dropped by three spots in the rankings and is now sitting at the 12th position with 712 points next to his name.

Pakistani wicketkeeper-batsman, Mohammad Rizwan on the other hand has now become Pakistan’s best-ranked Test batsman, sitting on the 10th spot.

Middle order batsman Saud Shakeel has dropped by seven places to 20th from the 13th spot while his fellow countrymen Salman Ali Agha has made a gain of nine spots, rising 31 from the 40th position.

On the other hand, England’s former Test skipper Joe Root, who is having a dream-run with the bat in the longest format of the game is sitting comfortably at the top of the test-batting rankings and he has extended his lead at the top after scoring consecutive hundreds in the second test-match against Sri Lanka.

Root (922 rating-points next to his name) now holds a lead of 63 points over second placed Kane Williamson, and the English right-handed batter has a chance of breaking his previous best mark of 923 he set two years ago in the month of July, after scoring a hundred against the Indian in Edgbaston.

Despite scoring two centuries in the second test match against the Sri Lankans, Root got outshined by his teammate Gus Atkinson, whose all-round efforts with both bat & ball led to him making a huge jump in the Test All-Rounder and bowling rankings.

Atkinson, who became the third-player to pick up a five-wicket haul and score a century in the same match in the longest format of the game, made a jump of 48 spots in the top 20 ranks in the All-Rounder rankings and he also entered the top 30 in the bowling rankings.

IND vs BAN: Ahead of his 10-match Test stint, Shubman Gill makes a tall claim over his performance in red-ball cricket

0

IND vs BAN: Ahead of the Bangladesh series, the Indian players are awaiting a test return after their long streak of not having a test played for long, as they played their last test before the T20 World Cup.

Indian selectors and the BCCI have asked all their players, even the likes of players on the international side like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sarfaraz Khan, Shreyas Iyer, and many more.

The BCCI has spared only India’s top four players, of whom Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli have been rested from the Duleep Trophy participation. Firstly, Ravindra Jadeja, who was earlier picked for the Duleep trophy, has been withdrawn, though without a proper reason.

The pre-season though has been troublesome, as players like Mohammad Siraj, Suryakumar Yadav, the T20I skipper, and wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan have all been dropped from the first round of the Duleep trophy season due to a potent injury.

From among these players, Indian selectors led by Ajit Agarkar will be choosing the squad, which they will probably do after the first round of the Duleep Trophy, ahead of India’s home series against Bangladesh and later New Zealand.

Many Test players other than players who have India’s central contract, like Jaiswal, Gill, Sarfaraz, Jurel, Akash Deep, Pant, Mukesh Kumar, and many such, have made their test appearances, while many like Abhimanyu Easwaran, Devdutt Padikkal, Yash Dayal, and brilliant 22-year-old Tamil Nadu batter Sai Sudarshan are anticipated to make it to the Indian team.

Sudarshan recently had a season with the finest of forms in the County Championship with Surrey and is the most likely to be placed in India’s middle order. Bangladesh will be confident after their historic 2-0 victory over Pakistan on their soil, have risen to an all-time high WTC No. 4 position, and will look to capitalize in the Tests against India that begin at Chennai on the 19th of September.

Shubman Gill made this tall claim before the Bangladesh series, and he has responded by saying that his performance in the longest format has not been convincing as even it has not been satisfying for him.

Gill said, “In Test cricket, my performance has not matched my expectations so far – but we are going to play 10 Test matches this season and when I look back after those 10 Tests, hopefully, my expectations will be matched.”

Gill’s form has been a concern for India across all formats since the World Cup 2023, while he was also dropped from the T20 World Cup squad for India. Now, he would be back with the test hopefully in the middle order as their no.3.
