Josh Inglis takes Pat Cummins’ position as Australia’s white-ball captain versus Pakistan for the 3rd ODI and T20i series

Josh Inglis: In what proves to be a massive news, Australia’s hard hitting wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis has been appointed as the captain for the T20 International series versus Pakistan.Interestingly, the 29-year-old will also handle the leadership duties of the 2023 ODI World Cup winners in the third and final One Day International as the players picked in the squad for the forthcoming 2024 Border Gavaskar Trophy versus India get ready.

Josh has replaced Cummins as the skipper of the side, who, along with other senior members – Steven Smith, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Starc will be missing the final fixture of the One Day International Series as they prepare themselves for the difficult Team India challenge.

With regular-captain Cummins getting himself ready and fully prepared for the BGT and regular T20 International skipper Mitchell Marsh missing out due to being on parternity-leave, the selection committee of the Kangaroos have backed Inglis, who has experience of captaining teams in Domestic Cricket.

In the absence of important-players, the fast bowling duo of Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett along with wicket-keeper batsman Josh Philippe have been added to the squad.

Australia hoping to clinch the series in the 2nd One Day International match

In what proved to be a low-scoring thriller and a nail-biting contest, the home side managed to finish out on top by a margin of two wickets in the opening fixture of the three-match series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Batting first, the Mohammad Rizwan-led team managed to post a score of just 203 runs on the board as the Australian bowling unit wrecked havoc.

Babar (37 runs) and skipper Rizwan (44 runs) showed some retaliation and thanks to a late cameo with the bat by Naseem Shah, the Green Shirts managed to post an average-total on the score board.

However, the Pakistani bowlers created a nightmare for the Aussie batters as right arm pacer Haris Rauf dismissed three batters to turn the match in the favor of his team. But, much to the dismay of the Shaheen supporters, captain Pat Cummins maintained his composure and played an unbeaten knock of 32 runs in 31 deliveries to help his team end the match on a winning note. Now, with the senior-players given some rest for the final match of the series, the Kangaroos will be looking to clinch the ODI series by winning the second match.

IND vs AUS: India’s campaign at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is a highly anticipated contest, especially with the loss faced in the home test series against New Zealand. India would now be in the quest to secure a 4-0 victory in the BGT.

The first test which is scheduled for the 22nd of November, will be held in Perth. The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has not conveyed anything as of now, while Rohit revealed that he is unsure of continuing in the initial one or two BGT games owing to personal reasons.

Instead of the skipper, promising Indian opener Abhimanyu Easwaran has been added as an optional opener. However, great Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar has shed light that in case Rohit Sharma misses out on the first test, Bumrah who has been seen as his deputy should step in as the skipper not only for the First test but the entire series.

Detailed analysis says, that the new skipper would be under extreme scrutiny and pressure ahead of the first test, especially with the players down on morale due to their loss in the home series. Keeping Bumrah a skipper for all five matches would give him his dependency back.

“I have been reading that Rohit Sharma might not play the first two Tests of the Australia series. I feel that, in that case, the selection committee should appoint Jasprit Bumrah the captain of the side for the entire Australia tour, and tell Rohit Sharma that you will participate as a player in this series. For the first Test match, Rohit Sharma has to be there,” he added.

India who are in need of securing a 4-0 victory in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, to fancy their chances properly into the World Test Championship. Gavaskar feels that the visitors won’t be able to advance comfortably with such results.

However, the players should still focus on beating the Aussies and creating a unique record in the history of the BGT.

“No, I don’t. I actually don’t. India cannot beat Australia 4-0 in the Test series. If they do that, I would be over the moon if they do that. But 4-0. India can win 3-1, 4-0 is, don’t talk about the World Test Championship final. Now just focus on trying to win the series in Australia. Never mind whether you win 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 3-1, 2-1. But go and win. Because that is how all of us Indian cricket fans are going to be back to feeling good again,” Gavaskar concluded.

IPL 2025: 3 Players Released by CSK Who Might Fetch Big Money in the Mega-Auction

IPL 2025: When we talk about the Indian Premier League (IPL), one just cannot keep the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) away from the discussion. The supporters just cannot exclude the team from their discussions, whether it’s because of their tactics, the controversies related to them, or their consistent performances in the league over the years.The same thing happened leading up to the revelation of the IPL 2025 retention lists.

The legendary and iconic leader of the Chennai Based team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, dominated all debates about the CSK retention-list.

The major points of discussions revolved around the future of the legendary former Indian captain and his retention as an uncapped player.

As the CSK team management revealed their retention list on the 31st of October, all the unresolved doubts got cleared as the five time IPL winners retained their former skipper for a price tag of 4 crore Indian rupees as an uncapped player.

The retention-list of Chennai made a major revelation that the franchise wanted to keep it’s core intact while also they have managed to hold onto some of their biggest match-winning players.

However, this meant that the franchise was forced to let go of some of their national and international stars due to the limited number of available retentions. These released CSK players will be under high demand in the forthcoming mega auction. Let’s take a look at three players released by CSK who might end up fetching a big amount in the 2025 Mega-Auction.

3 Players Released by CSK who might end up fetching huge amounts in the Mega-Auction:

  1. Matheesha Theekshana – The Sri Lanka mystery off-spinner can prove to be a valuable asset for any IPL team. Theekshana can bowl at any point of time in a Twenty-Twenty match. He can prove to be extremely effective with the new ball in the first six overs, restrict the scoring-rate of the opposition teams in the middle-overs and in the death-overs as well. Therefore, his presence in the playing 11 allows his side to execute their plans according to the situation of the game, which adds flexibility to the plane of the skipper.
  1. Rachin Ravindra – Rachin Ravindra, the New Zealand Batting All-Rounder had an excellent 2023 ODI World Cup, where he showed that he can perform well in Indian Conditions. With his consistent batting performances, the youngster further showed improvisation in his batting skills by scoring a remarkable hundred in the Bengaluru test-match versus India. The IPL franchises will be more than happy to make an overseas player a part of their squad who can easily adapt & excel in the Indian playing-conditions. Besides his remarkable batting skills, the 24-year-old can also prove to be a handy left arm spin bowler. The southpaw can provide a great amount of flexibility to his skipper, especially on surfaces where there’s a lot of support for spinners on offer.
  1. Devon Conway – Kiwi Wicketkeeper Batsman Devon Conway has established himself as a crucial part of Chennai’s batting unit in since the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. The 33-year-old has proven that he is a dependable opening batter as his aggressive batting style makes him a perfect modern day batter. His consistent displays and stability which he brings as a batter will surely make him one of the most in-demand players in the forthcoming 2025 IPL Mega-Auction.

IPL 2025: Five of the players released ahead of the mega auction who might go unsold in the auction

The entire cricket fraternity is on its feet with high levels of adrenaline rushing as the mega-auction for the IPL 2025 is creeping near. The reports from several renowned sports papers and sites have confirmed that the highly anticipated mega-auction will be held in Riyadh by the 24th or 25th of November.

The teams went on to announce their retentions on the 31st of October, and while some retentions took them by surprise, there were also some players released, which seemed totally unreasonable. Franchises are all busy making their last-minute plans as every team looks to make key additions ahead of the upcoming IPL.

In the upcoming mega-auction, there might be chances of some of the greatest players being left unsold due to the teams limiting their purse on key retentions.

Top 5 released players who might go unsold

Matthew Wade

Wade IPL

Wade recently retired from international cricket as well. Though he has been a domestic legend and a very crucial player for years in the BBL, Wade has never had a very impressive run in the IPL.

In his career, he played in only 15 matches, where he scored 183 runs, averaging 13.07. Matthew Wade was part of the Gujarat Titans, and despite his weak performances, the Titans lifted the cup back in 2022. Titans released him, and he might go unsold this time in the auction.

Keshav Maharaj

Keshav Maharaj IPL

Maharaj was featured for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2024, where the experienced spinner played his first two games in the IPL. His record, though, has been impressive in the shortest format, and Maharaj also has some quality batting ability.

Despite all, the IPL would not look to have the services of as big a left-arm spinner, as India has many such players in the role.

Shai Hope

The Windies limited-overs skipper, Hope, has played several crucial innings for his national side. While the Delhi Capitals had included him with INR 75 crore, he was not much used in the services, and even he didn’t seem likely in form.

Hope has been released by the Capitals, and despite many teams in need of wicketkeepers, it is not very likely to feature him any further for any franchise in the upcoming IPL.

Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson IPL

One of the biggest names on the list and one of the greatest players of the generation. The Kiwi star has had successful seasons with Sunrisers Hyderabad and also led them to a final in 2018. In 79 IPL games, he has scored 2128 runs with an average of 35.47.

Williamson since 2022 has not featured in the IPL, despite being in the Gujarat Titans camp owing to his often injured status. Williamson will not look to fancy much chances of him into the upcoming mega-auction.

Ajinkya Rahane

Rahane IPL
Ajinkya Rahane might finally end his IPL career (image Credit: Scroll.in)

Another big name on the list, but probably age and form are what don’t make him an ideal choice for IPL anymore. Though Rahane had some great seasons with CSK, his form didn’t click last season. His high strike rate fancied his chances in the yellow jersey over the first season.

Rahane, the great IPL veteran, might for the second time not be picked by any team in the mega-auction, which might also draw curtains to his career in the IPL.

Australia edge out Pakistan by 2 wickets in action-packed 1st ODI, take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series

0

Pat Cummins-led Australia defeated Mohammad Rizwan’s Pakistan by a margin of two wickets in an action-packed first One-Day International of the three-match series on Monday, 4th of November at Cricket Ground of Melbourne. Aussie skipper Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Steven Smith and wicketkeeper batsman Josh Inglis played an important role for the home side as they took a 1-0 lead in the series by winning in the low-scoring thriller.

Pakistani seamer Haris Rauf was good with the ball for the visitors but the Shaheens were not able to put a high score on the board as the Mighty Australians chased down the target of 204 runs with two wickets to spare.

Having opted to field first after winning the toss on a tricky Melbourne wicket, Starc made an immediate impact as he dismissed opening batter Saim Ayub (1 run in 5 balls) in the 3rd over of the Pakistani inning. The left arm Aussie seamer carried on with his dominance as he struck again with the ball, dismissing the other opening batter Abdullah Shafique (12 runs in 26 balls) in the 7th over.

With the Shaheens sitting at a score of 24-2, experienced batter Babar Azam tried his best to turn things in favor of his team by playing a decent knock of 37 runs but he too was sent back to the dugout by leg spinner Adam Zampa.

The Green Shirts’ newly appointed skipper Mohammad Rizwan steadied the sinking ship of the tourists by playing a knock of 44 runs as his team finished their inning for a score of 203 runs in 46.4 overs as they got bundled our by the rampant bowling effort of the Aussies.
Mitchell Starc ended the match with figueres of 3-33 next to his name while the duo of Zampa & Cummins scalped two wickets a piece.

Skipper Pat Cummins helps his team secure the win with the help of a crucial 32-Run inning

Chasing a modest score of 204 runs, the home side started the chase on a poor note as they lost the opening duo of Jake Fraser-Mcgurk and Matthew Short on an early note. However, Josh Inglis and experienced batsman Steven Smith stitched an important partnership of 85 runs for the 3rd wicket before the former threw his wicket away to right arm fast bowler Haris Rauf on a score of 44 runs with the Kangaroos getting reduced to a score of 113-3.

Middle order batsman Marnus Labuschagne gave company to Inglis in the middle as they tried to get involved in a big partnership but Josh was dismissed after scoring 49 runs.Following the dismissal of Inglis, the Australians experienced a batting-collapse as the trip of Glenn Maxwell, Labuschagne and Aaron Hardie all gave their wickets away in quick-succession and the Pat Cummins-led team found themselves struggling at a score of 155-7.

But, bowling All-Rounder Sean Abbott played an important inning of 13 runs before getting run-out and captain Cummins helped his team get over the line by playing a match-winning inning of 32 runs in 31 deliveries.

The 2023 ODI World Cup winners will square off versus the Shaheens in the second One Day International on the 8th of November in the city of Adelaide.

3 Indian Players Who Might Get Dropped From The Playing 11 Ahead of Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024

0

Indian Cricket Team: The Indian Cricket Team had a shambolic outing versus New Zealand, as the tourists secured a historic 3-0 series whitewash on Indian soil. Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue suffered an embarrassing home Test-Series defeat, putting their hopes of qualifying for the WTC 2023-2025 cycle final in jeopardy.

The poor batting form of the Indians was the main reason behind their team’s downfall versus the Tom Latham-led team. While the duo of Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant tried their best to show resistance versus the fabulous bowling display of the Kiwis, their team mates were not able to put up a fight on the spinner-friendly surfaces.

The home side didn’t look comfortable at all verus New Zealand’s excellent spin bowling, which allowed the tourists to register a historic Test-Series win on Indian-Soil after a really long period of time.

As a result, keeping in mind the massive importance the Border Gavaskar Trophy holds for the Men in Blue, the Indian team management might be looking to make some tough decisions to keep their hopes of qualifying for the WTC Final alive. In such a case, we will take a look at three players who might not get a chance to play in the first Test-Match versus Australia in Perth.

Three Indian Players Who Might Get Dropped From The Playing 11 in Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024:

  1. Ravichandran Ashwin
389704
Ravichandran Ashwin of India was decent with the ball in the New Zealand Test-Series | Image: BCCI

Since making his Test debut in 2011, Ashwin has played an important role with the ball for India in the longest format of the game, helping them win countless number of series. However, the 38-year-old wasn’t at his best in the New Zealand Test-Series, with off spinner Washington Sundar out-performing him on the spinner-friendly decks.

Besides providing batting-depth to the Men in Blue, Sundar’s ability to generate over-spin makes him a strong contender to play in the first Test-Match in Perth. The seamer friendly conditions of Australia won’t allow the Rohit Sharma-led team to go ahead with three spin bowlers, so with Ravi Jadeja likely to retain his place, the Indian team management might give the preference to the in-form Sundar over Ashwin for the role of the second all-rounder.

  1. Sarfaraz Khan
389398
Sarfaraz Khan didn’t play well in the second and third Test-Matches verus New Zealand | Image: Associated Press

Known for his consisten displays with the bat in Domestic Cricket, Sarfaraz Khan won the Indian Team-Management’s trust following a remarkable century he scored in the 1st Test-Match of the series in Bengaluru. However, he wasn’t able to maintain his consistency, recording embarrassing scores in the subsequent matches in the cities of Pune and Mumbai.

Therefore, considering his vulnerability versus Pacers and seam-movement, the Men in Blue might consider dropping Khan in favour of KL Rahul for the first Test-Match in Perth. The 32-year-old has also been asked to take part in India A’s second-unofficial Test-Match versus Australia A in order to prepare for the forthcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024. So, it’s highly likely that the former LSG skipper will replace the 27-year-old in the playing 11 for the first Test-Match.

  1. Mohammed Siraj
390186
Mohammed Siraj of India | Image: Getty Images

Fast Bowler Mohammed Siraj had a wonderful start in 2024 with the ball, recording a remarkable six-wicket haul versus South Africa in the Cape Town Test-Match. However, since that fixture, the 30-year-old has been poor with the ball, managing to dismiss just 13 batters at a horrendous bowling average of 48.46 in the five-day format.

So, with Bumrah making his comeback to the Playing 11 and seamer Akash Deep performing well as the second fast bowler, the tourists might think of swapping Siraj with a bowler who can hit the deck hard like Prasidh Krishna or Harshit Rana for the Perth Test-Match. Both of them can use the bouncy Perth deck to their advantage and make things difficult for the Aussie batters.

Former Mumbai Indians stars who could be signed back in the IPL 2025 auction

IPL’s most successful franchise, the five-time champion Mumbai Indians, have made their retentions ahead of the mega-auction, as five of their key players have been retained.

Among the biggest of the retentions made, Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been MI’s biggest retention, with a huge amount surpassing INR 18 crore. Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, both of whom can be an ideal option as MI skippers, have also been kept for a huge INR 16.5 crore each.

Rohit Sharma, the MI veteran, and Tilak Varma, the rising star, have also been kept by the Mumbai Indians for the upcoming season. Though they have retained a huge number of core players, the Mumbai Indians will be looking to include the likes of a few of their old Indian or overseas players.

Five Former Stars Mumbai Indians could look to sign for the IPL 2025 Auction

Jos Buttler

The English white-ball captain and undoubtedly one of the finest overseas batters in the IPL, as his best seasons came with the Rajasthan Royals. The Royals parted ways with the veteran after having retained him for 7 seasons.

He played for the Mumbai Indians back in 2016 and 2017 and was also part of one of the seasons under Rohit Sharma where Mumbai won the IPL title. MI, who released Ishan Kishan, might pick Buttler as their best possible opening wicketkeeper option.

Quinton de Kock

The South African veteran, who now has retired from the two longest formats of the game, started off his IPL career with the Delhi Daredevils back then before making a move to RCB. He joined the Mumbai Indians after being traded from RCB in 2019. Playing three seasons for MI, QDK scored 1329 runs for MI and was also a part of their 2-title wins.

Not being retained by the Lucknow Super Giants for the upcoming season, the veteran Protea wicketkeeper might be welcomed back by the Mumbai Indians.

Trent Boult

Trent Boult

Ahead of the 2020 IPL season, Trent Boult was traded in from the Delhi Capitals to the Mumbai Indians, and in his two-season long stint with the five-time champions, he struck for 38 wickets in almost 29 accounted games.

Known as a regular wicket-taker with the new ball, he also did stunningly well with the Rajasthan Royals over the course of the last few seasons, but if not retained this season, he might take his seat back in the Mumbai Indians camp.

Krunal Pandya

Will the Pandya brothers reunite in the MI Camp? (Image: Cricshots)

Alongside Hardik Pandya, the veteran Indian all-rounder, Krunal Pandya, his elder brother, was also a constant with the Mumbai Indians for six seasons between 2016 and 2021. Both Pandya brothers moved to the two different debutant franchises in 2022.

The reliable spin-bowling all-rounder is an asset to the Mumbai Indians side if they can acquire him back. From bowling in the powerplay to the middle-overs, while coming and hitting the ball long down the order during the end phases to be an electrifying fielder, Krunal has all the reasons to be back at the MI camp.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzi Chahal IPL

The most successful spinner in the history of the Indian Premier League, Yuzu Chahal, has also been released by his former franchise, the Rajasthan Royals, with whom he clinched almost two purple caps in the IPL.

Chahal has 205 wickets in the history of the IPL, while his best years came with the Royal Challengers Bangalore as he rose to fame at the Chinnaswamy. He might be one of the top-book targets for RCB, but MI, for whom Chahal started off his journey in the IPL back in 2013, might also look to bring him back in the hunt for an expert spinner.

Alongside these five major names in the IPL, there also lie a few other players like Glenn Maxwell and Nitish Rana whom the MI might target. Though it suits MI’s low purse left after the core retentions, they might have only one or two of these big names added to their lineup if they look to go behind these players.

IND vs NZ: Updated WTC Points Table following New Zealand’s historic series whitewash over India

India: Team India under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma suffered their first-ever home Test-Series whitewash in a three-match Test-Series, losing the 3rd and final Test-Match at Wankhede Cricket Stadium of Mumbai by a margin of 25 runs on Sunday 3rd of November.

Last week in the city of Pune, the Black Caps became just the third team after Australia in 2004 and England in 2012 to execute a Test-Series victory versus India in India in the 21st-century since the 1st of January, 2001.

Following their defeat in the Mumbai Test Match, the Men in Blue have dropped from the first position to the second rank in the overall standings of WTC, with their PCT dropping to 58.33, falling behind reigning-champions Australia who have a better PCT of 62.5.

New Zealand on the other hand have jumped from the fifth spot to the fourth position, with their PCT increasing to 54.54 from 50, slightly above South Africa’s PCT of 54.17 and less than the PCT of Sri Lanka (55.54).

With India dropping to the second place, Sri Lanka in third position, New Zealand in fourth, and South Africa in fifth spot, separated by a PCT of less than 4.5, this outcome has now produced a logjam in the middle portion of the points table.

The Rohit Sharma-led team cannot afford to suffer another defeat in their remaining five Test-Matches if they want to qualify for the final of WTC. By winning all five matches in the Border Gavaskar 2024 series versus Australia, the two time runners up can reach a maximum points tally of 158 points with a maximum PCT of 69.29.
