IND vs ENG: After a disappointing ODI Series against Sri Lanka – 3 Players who should be brought into India’s ODI squad for the England tour

IND vs ENG: India has been a great side when it comes to ODIs, from being the no.1 ODI side over a period of time and reaching the World Cup finals, they have achieved it all in recent years.

However, now India has moved from the hands of legendary Rahul Dravid to new Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir who has been much anticipated for the role after his title triumph with IPL franchise KKR.

India is currently playing its first ODI series under Gautam Gambhir and he has also called up all greats of the Indian team to feature for the Men in Blue. However, for the first time in many years, India has underperformed in the format especially against Sri Lanka, as they have had an exceptional record against the neighbouring nation.

India will play only the English side before the Champions Trophy in the longer format of white-ball cricket. The series is to be held in India from the 6th of February 2025, this will be India’s last chance to test their players in the longer format before they pick their team for the Champions Trophy.

With no one other than skipper Rohit Sharma scoring many runs in the series, India will likely bring some of their key players or even youngsters to the ODI squad to revive India’s great form.

3 Players whom Gambhir should stop neglecting and include in the ODI squad

3. Ruturaj Gaikwad

The Mumbai skipper for all domestic seasons should be now finally given a breakthrough in the ODI format as well. The batter has produced special innings for the Indians in the T20 games, however, he was not included in the recent series.

Gaikwad can be India’s best solution to the middle-order issues, as the batter often enjoys great flexibility with his batting role. The batter can handle spin really well and is a great striker once he sets his eyes on the ball. This makes him one of the finest choices who must be picked for the Indian side in ODIs.

2. Yashasvi Jaiswal

The youngster has been India’s star in the shortest format of the game alongside his stunning performance in the longest format of the game as well. Jaiswal is India’s best batter in the two formats and is the only batsman to feature among the top 10 in both lists.

Despite his brilliance, it seems surprising how has he been not picked for the ODIs, even after Gill has had the most unconvincing form since the Cricket World Cup 2023 in the format. However, now the left-handed batter should be picked to open alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, as the two batters attacking mindset will set a different tempo for India in the powerplay overs.

1. Hardik Pandya

Pandya was not picked for the ODI series on the behest of his request. However, the BCCI must strictly ask the all-rounder to make himself available for ODIs, especially with the Champions Trophy in sight.

Pandya not playing the 50-over format series has been a big void for the Indian team, as Shivam Dube has been miserable in the format. This is proclaimed that Dube for sure is not ideal to be picked in place of the veteran Indian all-rounder.

Pandya’s availability will be a relief for the Indian side down the order, as Hardik at no.6 and Axar Patel at no.7 will be a reliable pair whom India can trust to give them a consolidated partnership towards the end of the innings.

IND vs SL: 3 Reasons why Sri Lanka are favorites to win the ongoing ODI Series

IND vs SL: After winning the T20 series 3-0, India started the ODI series as a strong favorites. But it has turned totally in the opposite direction that the Indian camp would have thought of. After the first match ended in a tie, Sri Lanka outplayed India in the second game and took a 1-0 unassailable lead.

The Indian middle order didn’t have an answer against the Sri Lankan spinners, and they fell like a pack of cards in both matches. That has put India on the verge of losing the series, and this will be the first bilateral series win for Sri Lanka over India since 1997.

That means the wait of 27 years can end on Wednesday when these two teams will meet in the third and final IND vs SL ODI. So can India bounce back, or will Sri Lankan spinners make them dance to their tunes? We will discuss why Sri Lanka are favorites to win this series.

IND vs SL: Three Major Factors that make Sri Lanka favorites to win the ODI Series

3. In-form Lower Middle Order

SL vs IND 2nd ODI: Rohit's 50 Went in Vain as Jeffrey Vandersay Blew up Indian Batting Order With a 6-fer
IND vs SL

Indian bowlers have done a great job in both ODIs and taken early wickets. In the first game, Sri Lanka were 101/5, and in the second, they were 136/6. But despite that, India let them reach a score which was competitive. On the other hand, the Indian lower order has struggled in both games.

In the first match, there were a few 20s or 30s, but in the second game, only Axar Patel played a significant inning and other batters failed. That can make a big difference even in the third and final IND vs SL ODI. That’s where the visitors are missing Jasprit Bumrah.

2. India’s weakness against Spin

IND vs SL Three Major Factors that make Sri Lanka favorites to win the ODI Series
IND vs SL: 3 Reasons why Sri Lanka are favorites to win the ongoing ODI Series 9

There was a time when Indian batters were considered brilliant players of spin. But that can’t be said about the current Indian batting. We have seen in both matches. Apart from Rohit Sharma, no other Indian batter looked comfortable against spinner; even Virat Kohli and KL Rahul also struggled.

That’s where Sri Lanka have an edge. They are the hosts and know the conditions pretty well. Their batters are also struggling, but they are keeping wickets in hand, going into the final overs, which India haven’t done in the IND vs SL ODI series.

1. Consistent Changes in Batting Order

India vs Sri Lanka (IND vs SL)

There is no doubt that India are still favorites to win the last game to level the series. But two back-to-back poor batting displays might have raised doubts in the minds of the players. Adding to that, India have not gone with a settled batting lineup in the first two games.

There have been many changes in batting orders, and KL Rahul batted at No. 7 in the second game, which is not his usual position. That can also affect the team’s mindset. Though Gautam Gambhir has his own plans and it may work for India in the coming future but so far it has backfired on the team.

IND vs SL: 3 Players who might be dropped from ODI Squad if they fail to perform well in 3rd ODI

IND vs SL: The result of the second IND vs SL game stunned the No. 1 ranked ODI team as a Sri Lankan spin attack led by Jeffrey Vandersay caused havoc and the Indian batting surrendered against them. Only Rohit Sharma looked in control, while most of the Indian batters were not able to read the spinners.

That has put India on the verge of a series defeat against Sri Lanka. India have beaten Sri Lanka in the last 11 bilateral series, and the last time India failed to win a bilateral series in Sri Lanka was in 1997. So, there is a lot on the line.

India will be under pressure in the final game, and we might see a few changes in the playing XI as well. But if not, the third IND vs SL ODI can be a very crucial game for India and some players, because if they don’t perform, they can be dropped from ODIs.

IND vs SL: Three Players who are likely to be dropped from ODI squad if they failed in the coming third match

3. Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep Singh IND vs SL
IND vs SL: 3 Players who might be dropped from ODI Squad if they fail to perform well in 3rd ODI 13

The left-arm pacer is not enjoying this format. He has been part of both games but failed to deliver what is expected of him. He was at his best in T20I and took four wickets. But in the ongoing IND vs SL ODI series, he has taken two wickets only in two games at an economy rate of 6.17.

His economy rate is the highest among all other bowlers from two teams. With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami coming back, Arshdeep needs a good performance to retain his place. So, if he fails, he will be out.

2. Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar IND vs SL ODI
IND vs SL: 3 Players who might be dropped from ODI Squad if they fail to perform well in 3rd ODI 14

Washington Sundar was Man of the Match in the one game he played in the T20 series. But he has failed to deliver as an all-rounder in the ODIs. With the ball, he has played his part and taken four wickets at an economy rate of 4.

But with the bat, he has scored only 20 runs; that can be a big reason that India might look to get back Ravindra Jadeja for ODIs. Adding to that, Sundar got out at the most crucial times in both matches. So, he needs to deliver a good performance in the final IND vs SL to stay in contention.

1. Shivam Dube

Shivam Dube IND vs SL ODI
IND vs SL: 3 Players who might be dropped from ODI Squad if they fail to perform well in 3rd ODI 15

India have not used Shivam Dube for bowling much. He bowled a few overs in the first game and took one wicket. But his main role in the team is to deliver with the bat. He played a decent knock in the first game but couldn’t take India to win.

Then, in the second game, he registered a duck. So the time is ticking for Dube. He might be dropped from the third IND vs SL game, and Riyan Parag might come in. But if Dube plays the final match, he needs something special.

IND vs SL: After a disappointing loss in the Second ODI – Likely changes Gambhir would make to India’s Starting XI

IND vs SL: Rohit’s heroics went in vain as the failing Indian middle order could not chase 240 despite a confident start of 97 runs for the first wicket. India faced a similar downfall in the First ODI as well when after Rohit’s early cameo of 50+ score, the team collapsed while chasing a low total of 231, and the game was tied by an extraordinary effort from the Lankan spinners.

The second ODI saw the repetition of a similar form, while this time the middle-order collapsed further miserably which led to India’s defeat. The likes of Shivam Dube promoted up the order, with late KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, all failed miserably.

Now Gautam Gambhir the new Indian head coach should bring in some new players instead of the players who have disappointing form in order to avoid a series defeat in his very first ODI series as a head coach, as this could lower his morale before the Champions Trophy.

Likely Changes GG must make in the Third ODI to achieve success

3. Riyan Parag

Finally, this harsh fact is to be accepted that Shivam Dube is not ideal to meet the needs of an all-rounder is the Indian team. Despite having been given numerous chances in T20s, he was also picked for ODIs and he faced a backslash.

For this series their are no changes other than Riyan Parag that could be made for Dube. As Parag is the only all-rounder likely to replace him his spinning ability will add to his chances for making an ODI debut.

2. Khaleel Ahmed

Arshdeep Singh has been a top performer in T20Is, but he has not been equally convincing in the longer format of white ball cricket. Arshdeep might be replaced by Khaleel Ahmed who has been a part of Team India for long now though he has not received a single game.

Ahmed the left arm quick has the ability to swing the ball on both sides and is a track which largely favors spin his cutters and slower balls might come in handy.

1. Rishabh Pant

This is Gautam Gambhir’s final go to save his reputation, and Pant who has not been provided an opportunity to make a comeback, now should replace a failing Iyer or Rahul. The left-handed batter can also be a solution to India’s lack of opposite paired batters.

His form and his extreme ability to tackle spin can make him the ideal choice on a track like Colombo, which has already portrayed its spin favouring nature in the last two games.

SL vs IND 2nd ODI: Rohit’s Heroic Went in Vain as Jeffrey Vandersay Blew up Indian Batting Order With a 6-fer

SL vs IND 2nd ODI: Big event for the home team as Sri Lanka defeated India in the second ODI of the series by 32 runs. The series is now 1-0 in the favor of the hosts and celebration all over Sri Lanka.

Another match, another fifty for skipper Rohit Sharma but all his efforts went in vain as India lost the match following the heroic 6-fer by Jeffrey Vandersay. It is really a big moment for Sri Lanka as they have avoided the series loss.

This win of Sri Lanka marks the 58th win over India in a total of 170 ODIs. Let’s take a look at the match highlights of SL vs IND 2nd ODI:

The home team again got the right call on the toss and opted to bat first, which was the right decision on this slow surface. Siraj has been exceptional against Sri Lanka and this time again, he drew the first blood on the very first ball of the match. However, Fernando and Kusal Mendis got the back of the team and combined for a 74-run partnership.

Washington Sunder then dismissed both batters in two back-to-back deliveries and left Lanka with three down for 79. Sri Lanka were getting runs but also lost wickets from the other side on regular intervals.

Wellalage and Kamindu came to the rescue again and added 79 important runs for the team and Sri Lanka reached 240 after their 50 overs.

Indian openers started things in Rohit Sharma fashion. Sharma started with aggression and smashed his second fifty of the series and this time, he hit 50 on just 29 deliveries. India scored 76 runs in the first powerplay which was far better than what Sri Lanka scored in their powerplay.

Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma became the first prey for Sri Lanka and he got out on 64(44). The replacement of Hasaranga, Jeffrey Vandersay was the man for the team and perfectly filled his shoes. He again came in the 18th over and dismissed the set batter Shubman Gill and big fish Shivam Dube in the same over and brought Sri Lanka back in the game.

After that, Vandersay single-handedly destroyed the Indian middle order and sent Virat, Shreyas and KL Rahul back to the pavilion for cheap. The two left-handers- Washington Sunder and Axar Patel started to set foot and weaved a partnership under really hard conditions.

Jeffrey Vandersay

Axar Patel played the aggressor and Washington held on to the other end. He waited for bad balls and gave hope to Indian fans but not for too long. Skipper Charith Asalanka took a blinder to send him back to the pavilion.

Washington Sunder never looked settled and lost his wicket soon to Asalanka. Siraj and Kuldeep tried to score a bit but the only thing they could do was reduce the defeat margin. Sri Lanka wrapped under 208 and won the game by 32 runs.

Jeffrey Vandersay delivered the match-winning performance for Sri Lanka and was awarded as player of the match. He also registered the career-best figures in the match (6-33). Charith Asalanka, the skipper of Sri Lanka, isn’t having a good time with the bat but he has been on point with the ball in his hand.

IND vs SL: Rohit Sharma surpasses Sachin Tendulkar with an incredible fifty in the Second ODI

IND vs SL: India’s T20 World Cup-winning skipper, who stood firm in the World Cup and led India to a title triumph, announced his retirement from the format. But though Rohit has left playing the format, the format doesn’t seem to let Rohit go, as he has evolved his ball-striking strategies and implemented them in the longer format of white-ball cricket.

Sharma broke several scintillating records in the first ODI as he surpassed many greats of the game. So did he when he came into bat in the 2nd ODI as well, as he went past the likes of greats Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni to claim the fourth spot among the highest run-getters for the Indian team in the ODI format.

Rohit, one of the greatest white-ball openers of all time while playing in the powerplay, scored yet another half-century. Firstly, he broke one of the most legendary batters in the world and India’s greatest ever, Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most tons in World Cups. The legend, who had six centuries to his name, was surpassed by Rohit, who scored his seventh (7) against Afghanistan in the Cricket World Cup 2023.

This time around he has produced something very different to once again get past the legendary player, Rohit, who levelled himself with the likes of the legend in the 1st ODI with 120 50+ scores as an opener in the format, now has gone past Tendulkar with 121 such 50+ innings and is still counting. This was Rohit’s second 50 of the series, and both were scored within the powerplay at a very quick time, as he scored the first one with 33 balls and the next in just 29 balls.

This feat adds another recognizable feat in his career following his stunning record of the highest individual score of 264, which seems quite unbreakable in the near future. Many have claimed if anyone is worthy enough, then it’s Rohit to break his record.

IND vs SL: Indian skipper to step on the field in the 2nd ODI eyeing to break several records of veteran cricketers

IND vs SL: Veteran Indian opening batsman and Indian team skipper is back playing in ODIs for the Men in Blue first time since their defeat at the CWC 2023 at the hands of Australia in the finals. The skipper recently won the T20 World Cup and under Gambhir’s behest was back for the ODI series against Sri Lanka.

The veteran batter is often said to be one of the greatest to have played in the modern game, as he turns out to be world’s best players among openers. Rohit already has several records in white-ball cricket, from scoring 3 double-tons in ODI cricket, to a highest individual score in an ODI innings with 264 against the same Lankan side.

Records achieved by Skipper Rohit Sharma in First ODI against Sri Lanka

Most International Sixes as a Captain

In the first ODI, Rohit soon launched a brutal attack on the Lankan bowlers, as he scored a fastrack 50 in just 33 balls. He neared many records and broke a bunch of them as well. With 3 sixes in his innings he went past England’s Eoin Morgan for the most sixes as a Captain of an international team.

Most 50+ scores in the First 10-overs of an ODI game

Rohit now also follows legendary Indian opener, Virendar Sehwag, in most no.of 50 plus scores scored within the first 10-overs. As Sehwag as 7 of them under his belt, Rohit Sharma also follows with 3 of them.

Most 50s as an Opening batsman in ODI cricket

Rohit in his last match’s 50, went passed several greats as opener, as he scored his 120th 50+ score in ODI cricket only to be left behind Aussie veteran David Warner, who has 146 such innings, this is combined stats for international as well as domestic cricket.

Most Runs in International Cricket as an Opener

His most exciting stat also came as an opener in international cricket, as Sharma now has 15000 runs in internationals as an opener, across formats combined, only behind the likes of two legendary Indian openers, Sachin Tendulkar (15335) and Virender Sehwag (16119).

Foreseen Records that could be achieved by Skipper Rohit Sharma in Second ODI against Sri Lanka

In the second ODI, where Rohit came into bat while India are to chase a total of 241, he achieved another milestone as he went past Legendary Indian batter and former world cup winning coach Rahul Dravid, in the most ODI runs scored for India. Dravid who has 10768 runs now falls behind the Indian skipper who recently picked a single off Asitha Fernando, to reach the landmark of 10769 runs.

The fans did not had to wait long to cheer again, as Rohit now surpassed the likes of legendary Indian skipper and wk-batter, MS Dhoni who had 10,773 runs. Rohit hit two fours of Wellalage to go past Mahendra Singh Dhoni including runs for the Asian team as well.

Rohit also simultaneously went past Sourav Ganguly on the list for most ODI runs on Asian soil, as he now has advanced to the sixth spot. Also the like of a big knock, 78 might make him the sixth batter to complete 2000 ODI runs against the same opposition Sri Lanka. He will feature himself alongside greats, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul-Haq.

What awaits the Indian team is doubtful, yet Rohit Sharma if back in the groove will be a great sight to watch, as he seems to be in some great touch and is likely to send a strong message of his form and brilliance prior to the Champions Trophy 2025.
