India’s Tour of Sri Lanka 2024 for a three-match T20I series was scheduled for the last week of July and it was going to be the debut of the new head coach Gautam Gambhir and new skipper Surya Kumar Yadav. It went as planned for both of them and the team.

India were already at the top of the table in the ICC T20I team rankings and after this three-match T20I series win, they have left Australia far behind in points.

India are leading the rankings with 267 rating points. They have played 62 matches in this cycle and they also became the world champions in this cycle.

Australia follows them with 256 rating points. Australia didn’t make it to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2024 hence they are 11 points behind India.

England are third in the rankings with 253 rating points. They played the semifinals against India and got their feet out of the tournament. West Indies are next with 252 ratings.

IND vs SL: The three-match T20 series between India and Sri Lanka have ended, and India have snatched the victory from the jaws of defeat. They have managed to defend a low total and stunned the Sri Lankans to register a 3-0 clean sweep.

The game ended in a tie, and India won the Super Over with five balls to spare. It was a great effort from the spinners and part-time spinners. At one point, Sri Lanka needed 30 runs off 30 balls with nine wickets in hand.

But from that position, they went on to lose the game, which was a shock for the Sri Lankan fans. With this, India have won the IND vs SL T20 series 3-0, and it was a great start to the Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav eras in T20Is. IND vs SL: The third T20 is being held at Pallekele, and Sri Lanka’s new skipper, Charith Asalanka, won the toss and elected to bowl as he put Surya led India to bat first. The Indians have batted well in the previous two matches.

However, this time India likely made several changes to their squad. Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh have been rested for the game as Shivam Dube, Shubman Gill, and Khaleel Ahmed came into their starting XI.

Gill failed to perform well as he batted too many balls for his highest score of 39. The dynamic opener Jaiswal and also skipper Suryakumar Yadav failed to perform this time. India collapsed with Parag bringing in a counterattack and also Washington handing in some crucial runs as he was brought in for Axar Patel.

India again did not start very well with the ball, as the Lankans went 90 with the loss of just one wicket; however, Indian spinners now pulled off a stunner, as Bishnoi and Sundar struck thrice to resist Sri Lanka to 118/4. The Lankan batters took the score to a tie, and the game went into the super over. This once again reflected Gambhir’s unconventional techniques that were intended to give only promising results.

Washington Sundar was given the ball in the super over as India came in to bowl. Kusal Perera took a single off the first ball followed by an extra run; however, Sundar got rid of the two other batters, Perera and Nissanka, resisting Sri Lanka to a score of 2. The skipper hit a four of the first ball to take India home with a clean sweep over the hosts in the T20 series with a 3-0 victory.

Soon after, Dravid was replaced by Gautam Gambhir as team India’s head coach throughout all formats. Also, Gautam Gambhir now leads a team that has a massive blend of young talents led by senior experienced players, of which Suryakumar Yadav, India’s star batter in the format, was chosen over their dynamic all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the role of the Indian T20I captain.

Surya, who had previously had success with the Indian team as a skipper, first against a home series win over Australia followed by a rain-affected draw with the Proteas on their soil. With a 2-0 lead, India has already secured a series win over Sri Lanka in the T20is, and what awaits them is a whitewash.

However, he did not find a place in Gambhir’s 15-man squad, and so did Abhishek Sharma, who is in red-hot form, and even smashed a stunning ton in just the 2nd international appearance for his country.

Also, not having picked the likes of Avesh Khan and Mukesh Kumar, both of whom have been India’s frontline performers in the T20is, over Mohammad Siraj seemed to be a partial pick on the end of Gambhir.

Gambhir, despite facing severe criticism, stuck to his ground of having made an ideal team; as he said, despite being in good form, all players cannot be picked at all times.

Gambhir placed his bet on the same known opening pair of Gill and Jaiswal that paid off well in the first game before Gill sustained an injury serious enough to be ruled out of the 2nd T20I, only to be replaced by Samson, who miserably got out for a golden duck.

A stern middle-order led by skipper SKY at no. 3 and followed by the likes of Pant, Parag, and Big hitting Pandya and Rinku Singh down the order. Axar Patel was handed a spot at No. 8, not using much of his batting standards.

The bowling deck looked great with Bishnoi and Arshdeep showing some great composure, while Siraj didn’t land too well, as still India are ahead of the hosts by a clean 2-0 margin.

This is the Indian team’s first series victory under the new coach and truly a matter of joy.

The Asia Cup to follow in the upcoming year

Though for now Gambhir’s prime focus would be on having his team settled enough in the ODIs for his first ICC tournament, the Champions Trophy, to be held in February 2025. He also showed interest in having a fixed playing XI with whom he can conquer certain areas of discomfort in both the shortest format of T20s and tests, with the likes of the Asia Cup and the WTC final approaching.

Though recently the buzz has been over if India would travel to Pakistan for the CT 2025 or likely if they do not then what will be Pakistan’s stay on the Asia Cup to be held in India late in 2025. Still, Gambhir and co. would be ready from their end.

Gambhir’s probable choices and preferences for the Asia Cup 2025

Though the Asia Cup is far from now and India has a busy schedule the upcoming year and also the watchable IPL 2025, Gambhir would still look to have his men fixed in the pre-season.

Suryakumar Yadav, who doesn’t seem much affected by a captaincy role, might be brought in as the permanent T20I skipper for India.

With the dilemma still remaining over Gill, mostly after his fitness issues, Yashasvi Jaiswal is sure to be India’s top priority opener in T20s.

With Sanju Samson getting fewer chances in T20s and KL Rahul not seeming to make a likely return to the shortest format, Rishabh Pant can take his chances with the gloves.

If Sanju Samson is given the role with the gloves, then even Pant can be dropped for the game, as Sundar might replace him with India coming to play alongside three spinners.

Sundar, who was the Player of the Series in the Zimbabwe tour, can also replace the likes of World Cup winner Axar Patel or be the substitute option in place of Ravi Bishnoi, who has been a special bowler in the series so far.

Pant is making a comeback into the ODI team post his accident. Rishabh Pant made a comeback to the Indian team after having a decent IPL season, and the Men in Blue saw immediate success with the T20 World Cup trophy.

Pant, who has now lost his spot to players like Iyer and Rahul in the ODI team, must perform to the best of his merits to come into the limelight to be included in the squad for the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be held in Pakistan the coming year.

Shubman Gill

Gill was India’s top performer in ODIs when everyone seemed to be off touch; however, lately Gill has failed to perform in the format. His underperformance in the CWC 2023 saw him being snubbed of a chance at the USA T20 World Cup.

Selectors headed by Agarkar have proved that if any players underperform, however big a name they are, they do not stand a chance of being selected for the Men in Blue. As Jaiswal has once again not been provided an ODI spot, Gill would be the only likely choice with the skipper to open the innings, and he needs to play an innings of a lifetime to get his name among the team sheets.

However, Gill’s fitness has also been a concern, as he has always been seen facing troubles on the field when India plays under humid sub-continent conditions, especially if he goes deep in the innings. This adds to be a demerit to his selection chances.

Arshdeep Singh

Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah both can be the ideal players to be picked for the Champions Trophy if they both are fit and fine to play. Arshdeep was India’s lead bowler in the T20 World Cup, as he was also the tournament’s highest wicket-taker.

Considering him as the ideal 3rd choice bowler would not be wrong, as the lanky left-armer has been the best in the business. Singh would be placed ahead of Siraj if he can do equally well in the longer format of white ball cricket.

Washington Sundar

Dube reminds us much of Daryl Mitchell, as he is not great with the ball in hand. Though Pandya has been rested from ODIs, yet Dube is not the ideal choice to bring him down in the format.

Though Jadeja has been dropped in front of the series, his chances in the Champions Trophy remain firm. Sundar can be the better-off player to be considered ideal for replacing the veteran all-rounder, or also be placed ahead of Pandya if his fitness comes in the way of his Champions Trophy selection.

Washington Sundar is good at batting down the order, and he is efficient in bowling quick overs during the middle phase of the innings.

World Test Championship Points Table 2023-25: England clean sweep West Indies in a three-match test series with a win in the final test match by 10 wickets. Dominant England are back on business with their special brand of test cricket and the restart went quite smoothly and eye-catching. Aggressive shows by batters and attacking bowling tactics have been key for England in the past couple of years if we exclude the Ashes and India series.

West Indies showed great fights in the first two tests but defeating England in England is not a cakewalk. The third test was supposed to be even as the Edgebaston was supposed to favor West Indies bowlers as well, but England were really invincible.

Jason Holder and Joshua da Silva played saviors for the West Indies and following their contribution down the order, WI posted 282 in the first innings. Gus Atkinson shone again for England and took another four-wicket haul.

England lost 3 wickets till the Stumps on Day 1 at just 31 runs and looked on the back foot. They also lost Pope and Brook early the next morning. It was Stokes and Root’s partnership that took the momentum back to England’s camp. The rookie Wicketkeeper batter Jimmie Smith and Woakes also contributed with big half-centuries.

England took the lead of 92 runs in the first innings. West Indies gave it up their all to overturn the lead but it took a lot of wickets from them and they could give only an 82-run target to England.

Stokes came to open with Ben Duckett and he bashed and slashed the WI bowlers all around the park to post the record-breaking 24-ball fifty.
